| What are you going to tell your interviewers when they ask why you left your last company? |

sending resumes should be your last option, it's the worst thing ever. Last two jobs were because of hints by friends. You have to tell people around you that you're looking for a job, it works. 80% of jobs aren't displayed anywhere. |
Whether that is true or not, sending a resume out shouldn't be your last resort ever. That is the worst advice I have ever heard of.

Looking for a better opportunity. Never ever talk bad about your last employer in an interview. |

ok the interview went very well. the attorney passed by and looked at me and instantly recognized me but didn't remember my name. he had a big smile on his face when i told him i used to work for him and then he remembered how i was friends with his secretary (she just quit and i'd be working for him). he seemed genuinely happy to see me there. i already got a call from them to go back tomorrow and meet with the 2 attorneys. W000t!
and yea the girl who was interviewing me was very nice. i didn't bad mouth my boss i just said i was a little burned out on the type of law and that there was just a difference in personalities and that she was more than welcome to call him for a reference.
his secretary has been with him for 10 years. she has 2 little kids and just wants to be a stay at home mom now so she left and he's bummed. i got such a good vibe from him in those 2 minutes and plus i remember him from when i worked for him when i was younger. he's a super friendly guy and i think we'd make a great team.
oh yea and i just got another call from a place i submitted my resume to and they want me in tomorrow for an interview:D |

It isn't that. Just as Fahad mentioned, you put your resume to 50 companies and you are more likely to get a few interviews. You may have 200 friends, but not all of those places will be hiring. Not to mention that referrals are something you shouldn't take lightly. If you refer someone, it is a reflection on your judge of character.
Jamie: Awesome. Hope you get the job! |

ben...trust me..malek is right.
a 30 year old who has had some success in life vs a guy in his early 20's who has an entry level job position.
who do you think knows what they are talking about more?;)
there is nothing wrong with mass mailing resumes...but if you saw the listing, so did 200 others. Getting in through "the know" leaves you infinite more room to negotiate a more competent salary than getting in through competition where the employer can set its own terms as it sees fit.
the best jobs are not posted and recruited publicly. |

Did I ever doubt that? Re-read my post. ;) |

fair enough.
a good suggestion is to apply to places you WANT to work even if they do not have anything listed and you do not know anyone to get you in.
A HR person sifts through so much bull, that sometimes a little initiative like this will catch their attention. By writing a good cover letter showing the knowledge you have of the company (do research) and showing this expressive interest you have in being an employee will show the balls that they see to make you fit for a call back at the least. |

Totally agree. Showing you aren't a sit on your ass for to happen type, goes a long way. |

an HR person or manager spends a maximum of 10 seconds going thru a resume, and I'm being generous. Anyting that she/he might dislike and yours goes to the garbage... so what are the chances of being called? especially when the economy is weakening and there's tons of people looking for jobs.
In order:
1-calling friends, family to let them know you're looking for a job.
2-selecting a few companies that really intrest you, call their HR dept and ask for openings, jobs aren't always advertized on their websites.
3-going to a placement hr firm
4-mass mailing of resumes |
