yea i have a pretty catchy cover letter that is only a paragraph and my resume layout is great. i list my skills & accreditations first so it's like a quick little overview (bullet style) of what i'm made of (i.e. i'm a notary, i can type 80 wmp, i'm proficient in bla bla programs, impeccable attendance record, etc..) then i follow that with my experience and then education and 3 employment references.

cover letter is supposed to be short and sweet and leave them wanting to see more.

one line that mentions what draws you to the company (try and use something that shows you did research.) It is only one sentence and takes no time.

When you go on a date, do they like it more when you talk about you, or them;)
Silky Johnson
Yep, was just gonna say it should show you did some research about the company.
Slylee
yea but a lot of times the company info isn't available like especially on craigslist. legal jobs are huge on craigslist so that's been my primary source of job hunting. careerbuilder too and i also have been talking to a head hunter.
elFreak
also stuff like impeccable attendance record is useless.

no one will write "misses work every monday", so stick to the qualifications.

if you write stuff like that, it makes them crumple it up and throw it in the waste basket as that is not a selling point. They only want what is needed.
Slylee
no it's not. i never call in sick or slack off and i like to point that out. obviously no one is going to put they miss work u ing douchebag but when someone is confident enough to commit to saying they have an impeccable attendance record, that says a lot...that i'm not some loser who will call in sick all the time.

ouch

craigslist no sweetie.

good companies let you know who is hiring. Looking for work is a job in itself, you have to hustle and dig deeper than that.

just make it really fancy.
make it bigger than how it is in 'real life'
or make it sound like you're a prodigy.

as a professional recruiter who deals with hr people i think i know what they are looking for and what makes you come off as desperate. I am trying to help you here. When you start listing points that are anything other that credible CONCRETE qualifications (aka stuff that they do not have to take your word for)...it comes off as desperate. Short, sweet, and efficient.

when you start writing stuff they do not care about they go to the next one. They don't have time for bull even if it is true.

stop being naive and neurotic and see that the comments are meant to help you not hurt you.
