It's not my fault everyone around here still thinks we're in 2005. Minimal techno got huge a few years ago, got really ing boring, and is now mostly dead, save for a few guys on beatport who were late jumping on the wagon and are still putting out crap plink plonk records. |

What it did, however, was leave a general style of stripped-down tracks which means a lot of records that are called tech house or even deep house sound incredibly minimal. And then people go splitting hairs amongst these very similar sub-genres to divorce themselves from the played-out minimal sound. The very fact these records are so sparse means they really don't justify the many categories they're chopped up into.
When the uninformed listener says minimal, he's often referring to that whole spectrum of sounds. Although, for the record, I don't go in the Chart threads and so I don't have a clue what you're playing and whether this applies to those records. |

It's really not that difficult to differentiate between MUSIC and minimal MUSIC. See Desyn Masiello thread opn this page.
Stripped back music is not minimal. Massive Attack have a lot of stripped back tracks but no one calls them minimal. People just like to use the word around here in the pejorative sense. |

This thread was definitely worth reading. 
And I do think it's funny the folks who get singled out - because 9 times out of 10 they're also some of the most helpful members of this site (, I even regularly recommend the trance I enjoy - just because I don't like the new stuff doesn't mean I hate the old), and also some of the people here most passionate about music. |

Well it goes both ways really.
When someone bashes trance they talk about unicorns and PLUR.
When someone bashes minimal they say that the music is cold, souless, heartless, unimaginative and full of bleep bloop and clink clonk sounds.
Both of these bashes can be unprovoked, so whenever a topic about tech house/techno/minimal/deep house gets talked about some trance guy (obviously majority of general populace) who doesn't know what the people are talking about, listens to tracks in the thread and posts that the track is , then the sarcasm and insults gets started.
The difference is just that minimal (saying this in a broad sense) people know more about trance than trance people know about minimal. Therefore, their insults go further than the range of 'bleep bloop crap' and they seem to 'win' most of these discussions simply because of more musical knowledge than trance people having been there and done that. |

I think you know I don't have a general problem with the "unicorn-bashers," and some of them (like you and Nefardec) are some of my favorite posters with whom I've had lots of good discussions. I just really don't see a point anymore in the breezy insults thrown at trance, especially since it gets you guys a reputation as "the haters" when, as you've noted, you contribute a lot more to the site than just trance-bashing.

But I guess you can reply that you don't really care what those newbie trancers think of you, which is fine I suppose... |
