Top show, lads. Everyone showed the exact amount of maturity I was expecting them to.

Give yourselves a pat in the back.

Stripped back music is not minimal. Massive Attack have a lot of stripped back tracks but no one calls them minimal. People just like to use the word around here in the pejorative sense.

Massive Attack don't make four-on-the-floor techy, housy tracks at 120-130 and they haven't become prevalent in the last three or four years. I say "stripped back" to generalise a whole host of stylistic changes that suddenly burst into vogue when minimal techno became trendy, not to encapsulate what "minimal" means (although I don't think it means anything much).

People do use minimal as a pejorative, but mainly because they don't like the aesthetic overhaul I'm talking about. I'm not taking sides here, because I can't stand modern McFluff trance, but I think it's a cheap argument when people say "That isn't minimal, it's stripped-back deep tech house". Old Plastikman records sound less like 2005-model minimal than 2008-model deep tech house does, yet one is minimal and one refuses to be anything like.

(And oh snap - hipster-jaded-elitist-minimal-hipster TA inside joke!)

This thread was definitely worth reading.

And I do think it's funny the folks who get singled out - because 9 times out of 10 they're also some of the most helpful members of this site (, I even regularly recommend the trance I enjoy - just because I don't like the new stuff doesn't mean I hate the old), and also some of the people here most passionate about music.

It was a joke.
