We went through this at work 5 or 6 years ago.
We could previously bank sick days and cash them out at the end.
We switched and I lost 30 days and had no option to strike.
The rest of the world has been changing the way they do business I don't think that unions should be exempt. |
Yes. We bank sick days.
But as outside workers working in all elements most don't have sick days banked due to the toll on their bodies. The new system that is being proposed is a benefit for them. That's not the real issue here. Those of us that have sick time banked is locked in until we retire where we will get payed out up to 120 sick days. If we have more than that, oh well...poof. Gone.

If you want to blame anybody, blame the city because they want us on strike. within one pay period they will make 7.2 million and it only cost 4 million to clean up the city. Don't believe anything you hear or read, it's all about money - it's what they want.

I don't quite get your math. 7200000 / 30000 = 240. I'm guess the average city worker makes more than $240 per pay period. Are you just referring to garbage collectors? If the average city worker makes $25/hr then 2 weeks off would save the city approx 50 mil.
Of course they want you on strike. If you stay on strike for 4 or 5 weeks the city will save the 250million required to pay out your bankable sick days. Or you could give up the bankable days and get paid for the next 4 or 5 weeks. What difference does it make? |

I said 7.2 Million not 72 Million. Check your math.
They don't have a choice but to give up bankable sick days, that's the difference. The days they have in the bank already aren't going anywhere. They aren't getting anymore. Average city paycheck, now that they're not paying taxes, is 3,000 per person x 24000 = 7.2 million. |

is this still on? | Only apartment buildings and town homes get garbage picked up. (Yes, condos are apartments). Because they are contracted but good luck with the contractors dumping their trucks. Picket = hell. |

seriously felt like telling them to off with their 18 sickdays |
Yes, 18 sick days a year.
While other people get bonuses at Christmas or just in general, they get sick days - no bonus.
While you think they keep racking up sick days, like pool balls, it stops at 120. If they made it to 400 sick days, they only get 120 when they retire. Is it really a huge deal to be pissy when these men worked 30 years for the city, or more? All weather. Rain, shine, snow, tornado. 120 sick day. That's it. |

ing brilliant.
well, seriously tho, what the hell are the residents supposed to do? ing live in garbage for months?
i am not impressed by either side. if you chose to be a garbage collector then do your job, don't around about sick days. i am sure that you are happy having a high paying job. there are many people out there without anything. this kind of bull makes unions look bad, you are supposed to be there to help workers not make them look like whiny douchebags. protect the rights of the worker in terms of safety and pay but don't make up issues that don't make a difference. soon there will be strikes over needing a starbucks coffee machine at the office. sick days? give me a break. if you want to get paid sick days then get sick, it's not that ing hard. don't double dip. and get this crap written into your contract.
the city is a piece of crap to for letting this go on for so long too. they let every union walk all over them. it's taxpayer's money that these unions are ing with. put your foot down. obviously it's easy to let it go for a few weeks but that just makes the city dwellers ing pissed.
if i wasn't so obsessed with recycling, i would be all for dumping the ing garbage everywhere and having it cleaned later. pile it on the gardiner, i don't give a crap. |

lol. you are not winning anyone over with these arguements. if they were actually sick for 400 days, they go ahead and get your money. yes, it's a difficult job.
it's the getting double paid when you are no longer working. a person cannot be hired to replace the worker since the retired worker is still getting paid for 3 months of work. who the made up this concept? 400 days? please, that's someone's salery for over a year!
don't you understand that the concept of banking sick days is stupid? they are not there to bank. they are there to use. same with vacation days. |
