really? What do you do...what's your job? Tell me how your dream job in the private sector is any more essential to society than the Toronto garbage collector who makes about 55 grand a year?

lol, well laugh all you want RJ. However, it is somewhat irritating to constantly come across comments that degrade anyone who works in a union environment. In this case, you hear the "garbage men are dumb and don't deserve to have anything" argument coming from people who really don't have a clue what they're talking about.

I was a scab during Montreal's postal strike. I was sorting mail, making 2x monimum wage. Simplest job in the world. If you know the alphabet and count to 10 (classify by postal code), you're hired. One day, they found our secret location, and trashed the place with baseball bats. We were back at it the next day after they got their media attention.

The next year, I worked as a mall cop in Montreal. Security guards in Quebec were all unionized (not in Ontario), and also paid twice minimum wage (Alexis Nihon Plaza). That summer job was uber easy. Didn't have to do much, though I was well qualified through extensive martial arts training at the time, and only had to use it once after a Metallica concert at the Forum next door.

So I saw both sides of the coin... I do think unionized jobs are very well paid for what they do... However when I was a was a USW (United Steel Worker), I found it sucked a huge chunk of my wage went to union dues.

Well if you and the ing union are so goddamned essential, then you shouldn't be allowed to strike. Simple as that.

There's a reason they're paid as well as they are to do the job. So do it, or let someone else who's out of work & willing to do it take over.

Unions are anti-competition by their very composition. Thereby breeding complacency. That's why I hate them.

I've also had the misfortune of working in 3 different unions over my life. So don't come back at me with any bull "you don't know what you're talking about" crying.

that would be 100% absolutely illegal.

Are you familiar with the term "scab"? You sound like you were a big fan of Maggie Thatcher, the breaker of the British unions. Perhaps that's why you moved to Canada? Because the last time I checked, Britain's (largely service oriented) economy is pitiful in terms of decent paying jobs. However, that's the way North America is heading. It's too bad most people were too dumb to see it coming.

Don't be so ridiculous and so very insulting.

I have NEVER said that those positions aren't essential. In fact, by their sheer nature, they are absolutely essential and I wouldn't ever want to work a week on a garbage truck. BUT, no-one should have the right, in tough economic times, to fight for constantly better terms of employment when unemployment is skyrocketing. It's racketeering. And so 'high-school'. The unions have one job and one job only and that is to get better terms for their workers regardless of what is going on in the rest of the employment world - for that reason, I think this behaviour is despicable.

City strike:

-You still get parking tickets but you cant fight them

-you need to use DOUBLE plastic bags and bring your garbage to transfer stations (so much for the 5 cent bag tax eh miller?)

-You are not allowed to bring garbage bags on the TTC (Cars FTW!!)

-Unions are blocking residents from dropping garbage at transfer stations. Instead of helping residents, the city is taking the opportunity to fine them $250 for leaving garbage in front of the picket line. Thanks guys!

I love Toronto!!

I think I need a drink.... oh wait.... never mind

People who are that stupid make me angry

Hold on to your garbage for a minute until you can find a better place to put it

The Ear
Better still, cut the goddamn plastic & bin it.

Don't let these lazy cunts get away with anything. I for one will be covering the handles of my bin with stick-um on the first collection day that these swine are back in my area just to piss them off a little bit more.
StereoPrincess
lol. the reason the bins were wrapped up because they don't want to garbage in there. since no one will be picking it up, they didn't want the smell to get out. but ing humans can deal with the little inconvenience.

within hours there was dumping at christie pits. wtf? you can keep your garbage with you for a few days. as soon as the strike was announced, they went to put garbage at the park. wtf?
