Unions are totally out of touch with the times.

40,000+ jobs lost in the Ontario economy this year and the unions feel that this economic environment merits them striking.

i do agree with the unions being out of touch. they definitely were not started to cause this sort of trouble. they were started to protect the worker from bad practices of management. but they are definitely out of touch right now. i don't like the brain washing thing that they do either. i think unions were very useful in times of past.

lol. i really am curious if the city actually saves that much money with them being on strike.

Sadly, I think we all know that this won't be the outcome.

It will all depend on how long the strike goes. If it is simply a week or so it might save them most of the wages but not all because there will be a bit of overtime to catch up. If the strike goes for a long time and they have to start to open up temporary dumps (parks, etc.) then a lot of the union members will not be out of pocket much. The city will be running 24/7 to get caught up and the staff will be working a lot of overtime.

Yes, blame the unions. It's all their fault, as always. It wouldn't be that the city of Toronto has grossly mismanaged their budget and have realised that cutting back on salaries and benefits is the easiest way to save money, now would it? It wouldn't be yet another example of a corporation using the "recession" and "tough economic times" to cut and undermine the collective bargaining process either!

Has anyone here ever put a full week in on a garbage truck? Does anyone know how much of a toll that puts on your body over 20 or 30 years? How is a garbage man's job any less important than any of you in the private sector? I'd say that my weekly garbage pick up is a lot more essential than a lot of you working in the private sector, especially in the service sector. How many negative comments on here about unions and strikes are coming from people who telephone others all day and try to shove crappy finance products down their throats?

There are always two sides to the story. How do you guys even know that the banking sick time is the biggest issue? Are any of you here part of the union, the city or involved in the collective bargaining process?

The banking sick time/early retirement thing is something that my former union (city of London, CUPE 107) settled a long time ago. The trouble is that when city workers (here in London at least) tried to take all their sick/vacation time within a 12 month period (it re-sets every year, on your hire date), they ran into problems with management. Oh, you wouldn't believe the that management tries to pull on their workers if they think they can get away with it. My old boss attempted to TELL me when I could and could not take my vacation time and actually questioned if I was really sick a few times. So, you give an inch and they'll always try to take a mile. This is why we have ing unions in the first place.

Agreed. Ridiculous. Give their jobs to people who are out of work at the moment.

that would be 100% absolutely illegal.

Are you familiar with the term "scab"? You sound like you were a big fan of Maggie Thatcher, the breaker of the British unions. Perhaps that's why you moved to Canada? Because the last time I checked, Britain's (largely service oriented) economy is pitiful in terms of decent paying jobs. However, that's the way North America is heading. It's too bad most people were too dumb to see it coming.
