AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Don't even get me started on this subject! I served and was a bartender for years, so ty service really pisses me off. And we tip generously, too! If it's a restaurant we go to often and we have a regular server, we'll tip somewhere between 20 and 30%. Bad service, I leave 10% to prove a point. And it takes a LOT to get me to do that - because I know the trials of being a waitress.
This last time we went to Captiva on vacation, we were so stoked to go to a specific restaurant for breakfast because we loved it so much the last time we were there. We get there and there was a wait (no biggie) - we finally get to our table and the chick comes up, doesn't say hi or anything and is like "what do you want", we give her our order and she stomps off. Well, I had ordered a side, a croissant, to go with my meal. Another chick brings me my breakfast, MINUS the croissant. We were DONE with our food before our waitress ever came back - drinks empty and everything. Then she comes back and I'm like uh, I didn't get the croissant... she goes "ok" and charges me for ANOTHER one and then I'm like "whatever... how long does it take to get a piece of bread, it'll be like a few seconds". I watcher her do ALL of her sidework (cutting lemons, stacking cups, cleaning the kitchen) before she brings me the damn roll. I'm like REALLY, come on how long does it take for you to get a GODDAMN piece of bread!?!??! I wasn't even hungry anymore but it was the point that I wanted it. We left her barely 10% which sucked for her since our total came out to be like $16. Normally we would have left like $22 and told her to keep the change but not this time. ing bitch. |
yea i have a habit of watching my server if i'm not pleased with the service. i'll notice after i asked for something that i need right away to start eating my meal (like mayo for my burger) and i'll see them chit chatting in the back for 5 minutes before getting my mayo and that really ing pisses me off. they clearly don't give a about my dining experience so i clearly don't give a about their tip lol
i was such a good watiress, i was almost TOO nice. i never understood the attitude of most waitors. they could give 2 s about their customers. it's like ok you're in the wrong line of work you ing moron. if you hate people so much, why are you in customer service/food & hospitality :stongue: |

gotta agree with you Squirrelly... Roy's is great. I know it's a chain but it's a high-end chain that has a limited number of them, like Del Friscos or something. What's Jay talking about? There are a ton of excellent restaurants in Orlando.
Oh, what was the place in Captiva where you got jobbed... Bubble Room? |

when you come from a city known for having an excellent culinary community, orlando has no good restaurants sorry.
i can remember some stupid friends of mine :"jay let's go to a nice restaurant tonight jay."
me: "ok i'm game, i have not had a class meal since i have gotten here, where too?"
them: "bahama breeze"
epic lulz. |

i dont mind going to chain places once in a while. actually, one good one is Longhorn steakhouse. not sure if you've heard of it but their steaks are totally decent and i've never had bad service there. |

also it is hard for me to consider a place fine dining when it is in a strip mall between pf changs and blockbusters.
everything is a in a strip mall in orlando, it amazed me.:p |

it's because it's orlando dude. one of the biggest tourist spots in the country.
and pf changs is pretty damn good, you don't like it?
i think the ideas on the menus of places like TGIF are great, but it's just the quality of the food/presentation, etc... that ruins it.
and that 5 star restaurant i hosted at had some crappy service sometimes. i would seat a table and 10 minutes would go by before a waitor went up to the table. it annoyed me. i would sit there at the stand waiting for them to get greeted and a few times i would even go up to the table and apologize and go get the waitor and of course he'd be in the back finishing his cappuccino and socializing like "yea so? i see them. they can in wait". i would just think, "wow. nice attitude you ing moron. this is a 5 star restaurant"
i could never run a restaurant omg. i would be firing left and right on the spot lol |

LOL @ Bahama Breeze. The restaurants are there man, people just don't know about them. I didn't start discovering them till I lived there for a couple of years. Winter Park has a great selection of quality places to eat. Some good ones in the resort hotels. I'm not saying it's NY or Paris in terms of restaurant quality, but it's not god awful by any means. |

i went to almost every restaurant i ever saw in winter park, including a french bistro run by a guy from montreal. They were not up to snuff sorry. To be fair most american cities are blessed with crap cuisine if they are not a major center.
i am not saying they were absolute tripe by any means, but i think we have different perspectives when it comes to gourmet/fine dining.
we grow up with it here, in orlando it is not something ingrained into the population. I am also from a snooty french place though:p
orlando is a small city with more rednecks than non rednecks (and the most non rednecks are in school and can't afford nice restaurants), it is normal that it is not up to par with say nyc. demographic demographic demographic. |

It's pretty much the same with the people I work with. They are almost stunned that I'm not a fan of the frikkin' Olive Garden  (Bahama Breeze and Olive Garden are both owned by the same restaurant)
My view on cheap dining is that with the internet and five minutes you can plan ahead and pay chain restaurant dining prices for something local, with a bit of atmosphere that might have great food. If you're out of town you can always ask a local, work colleague, hotel concierge or wherever. I'm lucky that I seem to do pretty well with this strategy if I plan ahead. Of the places I look up I'd certainly return to around 75% of them.
A few years ago my wife and I were driving to a relative's house and got stuck in some heavy traffic. We decided to stay the night in a hotel and grab a bite to eat...at the TGI Friday's next to the hotel. :o We only go out to eat maybe once a month and usually never bother with chains so it was a different experience. The sauce with my dinner had an interesting but quite pleasant taste to it and I asked the waitress whether it was orange peel. She went off to investigate and returned saying 'it comes in a bag from the factory and doesn't list any ingredients on it so we don't know'. Says it all about chain restaurants. Crappy food that is engineered to taste alright. You compare the difference between what you get from a $15 entree at a TGI Chillibees and a $25 one from a half decent restaurant the difference is amazing. When we got to the relative's house we told them about the story and one of them happened to have had a high school job working at a Red Lobster or Olive Garden type place. He wasn't remotely surprised and a decent amount of the food would arrive in a bag and would basically just need heating up.
I see a point in fast food places. You want something cheap and fast but if I'm going out to eat and spend a couple of hours somewhere I might as well spent a little extra time searching and avoid the blando chain restaurant garbage food.
The one thing I really don't get it the obsession with the damn Cheesecake Factory! Can someone explain that to me? My wife's parents won a gift card to it so we chose to go with them and see what all the fuss was about. The food was just poor quality, chain restaurant like but just a lot more expensive. Back in the UK it seems to have caught on as a great place to eat out when in the US. :conf: |
