A bit of both, he made a name for himself in the computer security world. ;)

not exactly. it was where they'd learn basics of many trades, electrics, woodwork etc and then they'd go on to work with specialists in time to fully learn the trade, before being able to go it alone after a while. It gives them vital skills and confidence.

Ok, I follow you. I would call that TAFE college over here.

Ghetto college :p

Most people here start trades at 16, or close, and work directly with a tradesperson teaching them. That way, not only do they learn the trade, but they also learn how to completely shun any kind of civilised human interaction, as well as cutting off the need for any kind of relaxation that doesn't involve fishing, 4WD vehicles, and nasty beer.

Hey I went to TAFE to as I quit school at the start of Yr11 to learn bits of beauty therapy, a bit of hair dressing and didn't end up and anti-social lunat... oh wait :o
Yeah, your right it was full of duds and spastics.

On the side I was working in a salon and getting pilots licence.
I didn't become a beauty therapist or commercial pilot either

At some point around 18-19 I found focus in retail and did courses in sales and leadership, then there was lots of chaos and ended up where I am with fairly much no relevance to school aside from elementary mathematics and literacy.

Good schooling is very helpful, bad schooling isn't. Although what you're doing isn't really "school" at all, is it?

It's required if you are in a very competitive field, especially if a whole lot of money is at stake

The most successful people often seem to be those who rejected study in favour of their own creativity and intelligence. However, to assume you can do the same is naive. A few job offers doesn't mean you've "made it".

Jake man, how the are you friends with Nou?

Anything can happen in 5 years, Nou. Suppose your job loses funding, and you are out of work. Yes, you have experience, but these days a lot of employers look for more than just a High School diploma, and I think it would benefit you greatly to get your degree. It's always a good thing to have, especially in this economy.

Nobody else can tell you what's important to you.

Until you have some actual credentials though, expect most everybody to take you about as seriously as people here in the cor do when you start talking about nuclear power/weaponry.
Boomer187
you need both work exp and degree, especially if you are going to work for someone else. stick it out you panzy.

or pick an easier degree.

EricB.
you're not smart enough or street smart enough (lack of a better word) to make it on your own. Go to school. Not many success stories started with some baldheaded loser with no motivation living in someones basement posting on ta all day.You could be the first...but i dont see it happening

The truth is this isnt the wild west anymore, this isnt the 50's where you can work your way up from mailroom to CEO in 15 years.

You def dont have it in you to do your own thing
