Is school REALLY that important or useful? (pg. 6)

i really think school is important. i have an engineering degree, and even though i rarely do engineering in my current job, i use technical skills i learned in school frequently.

more importantly, though, i have peers who get paid $10-$15k less than me and are not eligible for promotion because they don't have a BS degree. and they are equal to me in many competencies of the job.

it sounds like you have a good deal right now where you don't really need a degree but you don't know where you will be in the future. as you get older it will be harder and harder to finish your degree. it's worth it to put in the time now rather than watch people get jobs over you later because of it.

who owns the intellectual property that you are developing?

I guess I don't understand the formal relationship between you, the work, and the people interested. If you have your own company already, and will patent protect your work under that title, then you're golden. You will definitely own the product and that is key in generating wealth. If you're doing this project for another company, then THEY will reap all the benefits.

And by financial repercussions, I mean, you are sacrificing your own personal wealth by doing work for others. When you're in school, you can develop your trade using others' resources.

Right now it is a free, not for profit community addon for the game ArmA2. The same game has a version which is used as a military simulator by NATO, the US, UK, Australia and a number of other countries.

As a collective group, me and the three other people working on it, we retain copyright on our own contributions. This is not done for any company at the moment. The goal is to either form our own company and resell the technology to regional distributors of simulation environment or to make a one off sale and work for another company (but for sure with very good compensation for our work).

I personally think liberal arts education is dated. I have many friends who went to top liberal arts schools in the U.S. who all came out unemployed because they have few if any practical skills for real world jobs of today.

Didn't you get fired from your last job? How are you credible at all? With no degree, no job, and only open source community work, you hardly have any credibility.

I used to put a pin or needle in the tip of those arrows to fire at balloons. And possums. ******s.

I don't understand why everyone is giving Nou such a hard time. He's working on a project that's important to him and others, even if it is "just a video game". It's something that's going to benefit people. Who cares if he didn't go to school? There are tons of programmers in the world who have nothing but work experience and they still get work, that's what code monkeys are. Is he ever going to manage someone/something or some kind of project for a big company? Definitely not. Will he be able to pick up coding projects, and make a lot of money, for years to come? Absolutely. That's what code monkeys do. And, given, with enough money he can start his own company and hire people with degrees to make all the important decisions for him. Pretty sure Bill Gates didn't go to college :p

For the record, I think that furthering your education is worth a lot more than just getting a good job and making money. It's a way to better yourself as a person, interact with different communities and ways of life, and learn things you otherwise wouldn't learn. These are all things he probably doesn't care about because he has a crippled social life and a general dislike of people.

They said I could quit or get fired. :p

Like I said, I am not looking to go working for anyone else. I am far too awesome for that. :p
