Are heavy American accents just as difficult for you to understand as heavy Australian accents are for us to understand?
Most Aussies sound very close to Brits IMO, but I'll never forget this one time an Aussie tourist from "the outback" or whatever, was in a subway car full of people, in Times Square, trying to ask for directions over and over, but no one could understand, even though he was technically speaking English. Poor guy had to repeat himself six or seven times, before someone figured out what he was trying to say. |

I have no trouble understanding Americans, even the deep south accents. A good portion of TV available over here is from the US, so I've grown up listening to the various accents, and I'm pretty used to them. Most Americans wouldn't have grown up watching Australian TV though, hence it's probably a bit more difficult for them to understand.
I know what you mean about the 'country' Australian accent though, lol. I can understand it fine, but it's... a bit rough around the edges :p
And LOL at you thinking we sound like the British. They have tons of different accents! |
