Its not the best worded puzzle in the world. Think of it this way - he has to put 3 new labels on the chests saying what is in each one. |
If he's putting 'new' labels on each one, and assuming each one is filled with either gold, silver or bronze (and nothing else) then he would need to open 2 of them. |

nope. He wouldn't have to open any.
Because all the labels are wrong, the chest saying "Gold or silver" in fact must contain neither gold nor silver, therefore it contains the bronze.
Then, the chest saying gold must contain the silver, and the chest saying silver must contain the gold. |

If ALL the labels are wrong, then how can he be sure that the one labeled 'gold and silver' contains bronze? Or gold, or silver, for that matter :conf: |

it was labelled "gold or silver".
The label was wrong, it didn't contain gold or silver. If it didn't contain gold or silver, the only option left is that it contains the bronze. |
