I have no trouble understanding Americans, even the deep south accents. A good portion of TV available over here is from the US, so I've grown up listening to the various accents, and I'm pretty used to them. Most Americans wouldn't have grown up watching Australian TV though, hence it's probably a bit more difficult for them to understand.
I know what you mean about the 'country' Australian accent though, lol. I can understand it fine, but it's... a bit rough around the edges :p
And LOL at you thinking we sound like the British. They have tons of different accents!
Yanks think if you speak English and you're not a Yank, you must be a Brit :p

Ok, but that's one show! :p
Was it very popular over there? I know it was here and in the UK.

Nah, not at all in the US. But I grew up in the UK for a time. :p

Ah yes, that's right :p
Did you ever read Paul Jennings' books, that the show was based off?

Nope! Was probably banned in the UK anyway. :D

No one I know can tell the accents apart, actually. But again, everybody here thinks Brits all sound like Hugh Grant :p
(Funnily enough, I had never heard Australian English until long after I first studied it... so I knew what you were supposed to sound like, I knew what to look for in case I met someone from Australia, but I had no idea what you actually sounded like).

Technically speaking, no. The indigenous Australian people (what most people call Aborigines) have lived here for roughly 40,000 years :p
White colonisation, yes. The "First Fleet" was the group of ships that arrived in AU in 1788, consisting of mostly convicts from the UK, along with loads of officers, etc. They established a penal colony in Sydney, and things grew from there.
We always kind of lol at the English sending their prisoners to a land of gorgeous beaches, warm weather, and then teaching us to play cricket and rugby :p
