Ma petite and I have been talking about adopting a child in the future and it got me thinking: who here was raised by adoptive parents? How did you find out they're not your biological parents? What would you say to someone who wishes to adopt a child?

I'm serious, Meat - we can leave the fun trollment to my pseudo-philosophical threads :)

And if the person in question weren't Madonna I'd ask why not get a child the old-fashioned way? Is there anything I'm not aware of?

Edit: If this thread is not supposed to be about you then ignore me. :)

There are thousands of kids here in Brazil being raised by deficient institutions, and the planet is pretty crowded already. Surely, we may want to have a biological kid or two, but if we're doing better (economically speaking) than the average citizen in our country, and we can afford raising a kid, why not adopt someone who's already been born?

my cousin was adopted out at birth. some 25+ years later she actually found our family. unfortunately, she contacted us after her birth mother (my aunt) had died of cancer. but she fits in with the family pretty well. the irony is that she lived in the suburbs not too far away from all of us growing up and no one ever knew.

Of the people I know who are adopted, an extremely unofficial poll indicates that the ones who knew all along they were adopted are the ones with the least interest in contacting their birth parents. The ones who found out as teenagers were more interested in tracing their history.

If I were to adopt a child, I think I would choose one that had been there the longest. Everybody seems to choose babies, so that they can teach them their own ways, but think how frustrating it is if you've been in a foster home watching babies go past while you're still there..

Oh this makes me sad.

Anyway, go for it. I think it's a wonderful thing to do. :)

Lira if you want to do something good over there adopt away. But IMO, everybody has a basic responsibility to the species to procreate themselves and pass on the genetic code...

i think adopting a punching bag is a great idea. this way you dont have to take out your frustrations on your own kids who probably dont deserve it because they have real parents

It's an instinct not a responsibility. There's already too many people on this earth.
