"Free will is the consequence of a Divine creation"

I thought perhaps this may make for a good discussion/debate:

"Free will defines the human being. The human is a reflection of the Divine; just as He acts autonomously, we are free to express ourselves autonomously. That is not true of other created beings - no molecule, animal or planet does anything that breaks the rules of its programmed nature. Only humans are free to choose what they do.

...free will is the consequence of a Divine creation; a creature who reflects God must be free."

This is the oldest and most tedious debate on the Internet and this passage you've quoted goes right back to the wretched start.

Good point, but I thought the passage was interesting food for thought, nonetheless. Hope some others may like/consider it, as well.

What were you hoping to get from that quote? There are about ten gigantic philosphical statements in the span of three sentences in there, without a single argument supporting them. It's the philosophical equivalent of the Gish Gallop, the quote is so dense that it's basically impossible to argue against without writing an entire paper in response.

That wouldn't be a bad thing. Perhaps the point is that our lives have a purpose and meaning.

Really? How about our sense of justice and morality? How about going against our instincts and impulses? How about controlling and sublimating anger and negative thoughts? How about free will? Or would you say all this is simply a result of "chance" or evolution/societal factors?

Perhaps an interesting discussion/debate.

Out of curiosity, how many killers, rapists, thugs, etc. have you seen that radiate a kind of joy, general peace of mind and/or sense of fulfillment? And let's not include the "mentally ill" for the sake of the discussion.
