I'd give you the link to this article, but I was told that it probably won't be posted online til tomorrow. I will give you some highlights, tho.
From the National Post, Tues. 3/18/03
highlights from "Back doors locked at Toronto clubs too"
------------
"What happened in Chicago, you would expect it to happen in a Third World country. You wouldn't expect it to happen in North America," Deputy Chief Stewart said. This type of incident is unlikely in Toronto because of the strict enforcement of the provincial fire code, he added.
......
"In my experience, most of the business people here are above-board. They run a good business and we seldom run into [problems]," said Jack Collins, a division chief for Toronto FIre Services.
One of the city's larger nightclubs, the Guvernment, has a disaster plan in place and mandatory monthly training for staff.
"Most of the time, you have big problems at smaller venues, " CHarles Khabouth, the Guvernment's owner, said. Smaller venues don't tend to take as many precautionary measures, he said.
"When you have a big venue, you take things a lot more seriously becuase you see the ptential for good things or bad things happening."
The Guvernment, which has several rooms and can hold up to 2,500 people, is careful to meet Ontario Fire Code requirements, he added.
"We have more exits than wall space."
----------------------------
Here's a pic I found posted on technopunkmusic.com from Labour of Love. Does that look like "2,500 people" to you?

Your thoughts? Personally, I feel like writing a letter to the Nat'l Post.....

| Wow, can't believe the nerve of this guy. Unbelievable! Should definitely write the national post and invite them to send a reporter to cover the April 17th party to see how well the fire code is followed.... |

| hm...writing a letter to National Post would do something...they'd get opinions from the people that actually experience how packed it actually is. |

Exactly Peter. Hopefully it effect some changes? Who knows. What I always notice is that if they even open up the ENTIRE Guv/KH complex the thing that gets me is depending on who the dj is the Guv main room ALWAYS gets crazy packed because people from other rooms (KH/Orange room or wherever) go there regardless of the other rooms. So even if KH is open it won't matter much. At Summer's End (Labour of Love) they made us wait because it was WAY too overpacked in the main room. It pissed most of us off but what can they do? Even IF they open up everything/room in there they still can't direct how many people go into which room. (ie they can't make the main room have only so many people can they?) |

| write them....tell it like it is....or email the reporter that ran the story and tell whoever that charles is lying. They may write a story about it and charles will read it and hopefully wake the up because it could happen here if the clubs are not careful. |

| It would be best of course if many of us write separate letters to the editor about this, but I know that just won't happen. Here's my suggestion. If someone (Nat, *wink* *wink*) writes this letter by email and gives them links to several threads right here or on other boards with horror stories of overcrowding there, then the editor may take it seriously (if not already payed off by the Guv) and send a reporter for the next big party. Hell, we could even offer to "host" the reporter by taking them in with us so they know their way around and try and actually show them a good time, though this might be pushing it. |

thats a really cool idea Arcticboy. then maybe TA can be in the paper :D .

Do what you will - but don't link to threads on here.
Either way, I doubt you'll accomplish much - Guv's 'capacity' is based on the entire complex... If overcrowding goes on in the main room they can always claim overflow came from the other rooms, etc. |
