OKAY,
Enough with the arguing... You guys want the REAL story why Tiësto will be spinning at the opening ceremonies? It's not because he's a sellout or a shameless self-promoter:
Well, my sources say that some of the money he'll be making by playing at the event will go to certain IOC officials as "kick-backs" into a "slush fund".
Also, he will not be subject to the manditory drug testing that every dignitary and athlete must take.
...In other words, this scandal is even BIGGER than the Salt Lake City one when Pelletier and Salé got punk'd by that French judge paid off by the Russians!!! :stongue:
But let's keep this quiet folks, we don't want the press to hear about this! ;) |

| tiesto's not my favorite dj, but i think he's good, and the fact that he's opening the games drew my interest levels very high to want to catch it...i work during the day, but will catch the 7pm broadcast...i hope it puts in a good name for dance music...hes going to have a hard task trying to appeal to every audience...but something i find a lot is ppl that don't like dance music like it in relation to some sort of visual effect because it adds a lot of energy to whatever you're watching...take car commercials for instense! (the song in the new toyota commercial is awesome...i saw it b4 seeing bourne supremecy, but haven't seen it on tv yet, i'd love to know what that track is though) |

Only reason everyone hates Tiesto is because hes SO popular. |
Ah yes of course, I suppose that's also the reason why everyone hates Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, Sasha and Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, Tony de Vit, Ferry Corsten, Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim), Bad Boy Bill, BT, Daft Punk, and the Chemical Brothers?
Oh wait wait a second... people *don't* hate them! How is that possible?
Please, get real - nobody's being a "popularity basher" here, there are dozens of artists who've achieved the same POPULARITY as DJ Tiesto at some point, but not all of them were arrogant pricks that let it go to their heads and stopped trying to live up to their names in quality. Tiesto may have more appeal to the commercial world than most DJs but let's not forget names like BT who made groups like N'Sync overnight hits - and you don't hear us "hating" on them.
Ferry Corsten's tunes are just as cheesy as Tiesto's but I'd gladly pay to see him perform - he's a class act, total down-to-earth dude who seems to care about his fans and I won't hold it against him that he's produced some tunes which drive me absolutely ing bonkers (such as Punk). Tiesto, on the other hand, has really lost me - the dude either can't mix anymore or doesn't care enough to try, and he doesn't even bring in *new* cheese for his programming. |

Okay first of all people DO hate these as well...there just aren't as many posts about it, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who hate those DJs as well so that's just a stupid argument
And why would you call Tiesto an arrogant prick? He's just promoting himself, his muisic, and etc...He's just a regular person, if everyone told you you're amazing and you are THE BEST it will go to your head too eventually...regardless, he's on top right now popularity or no popularity he still IS on top. Some DJs don't seek and don't want the popularity...and some do...Tiesto, Armin, PVD for example are trying to reach out more and more people. Oh I'm sorry...i forgot that it's BAD to be successful...cause if you worked your ass off, got to the top, and became successful due to your skills, brain, creativity, or marketing then you MUST BE EVIL  We have the same mentality towards large corporations and successful millionaires...oh yes they are ALL arrogant pricks too, shame on them for being successful. |

Interesting how you used the word "artists" instead of word "DJs".
In fact, NO OTHER DJ HAS EVER ACHIEVED THE SAME POPULARITY as DJ Tiesto. |

Actually, can you name me one DJ who achieved the same popularity level as DJ Tiesto ??
If you can't find one, then this whole statement doesn't make any sense. |

I'm not going to dive into the debate of how good a DJ Tiesto is, because i'v never really rated him that highly. Basically i see him bunched in with the two other dutch trance dj's, ferry and armin. All three of them basically pushed the same kind of dutch melodic trance sounds that really became popular with people getting into electronica over the last few years and that's why their all pretty successfull right now.
People who say Tiesto #1 make me laugh though. Honestly, when are people going to stop believing the results of popularity contests. That poll doesn't take into account a DJ's technical skills, nor the impact they have had on the EDM scene. All it's really saying is, that the brand of music Tiesto spins has crossed over and more people appreciate it. That's fine...and that's true as well. Take an average person off the streets and play Tiesto's set for them, chances are, they'll enjoy it. It's fairly generic, and easy to groove to. That hardly makes him #1 in my opinion though.
On the other hand, people saying he's cheese, well i think there's a certain degree of elitism in that statement -- and this is comming from a hardcore prog whore. Tiesto's been guilty of spinning cheezy tunes, but so have a lot of other DJ's. Bashing Tiesto for spinning cheese, and then saying Sasha rocks doesn't put you up on some pedestal. Just say you don't dig Tiesto as a DJ, and drop it. This whole, he spins cheese is ed up, because what you're really saying is, if you listen to the music he spins, you're listening to crap. Within the EDM community, we could definately do without dissing each others individual tastes.
Fact is -- at some point, any world class DJ will try to experiment with the type of sounds he/she is pushing. When that happens, there will always be some people who reject it, while others embrace it. Tiesto's never really been a pioneer in my opinion, he basically found and pushed a brand of sound that was easily accessible to many clubbers and that made him successfull. If people continue to love his brand of EDM, I'm sure he'll remain succesfull, if they grow tired of it and move on, he'll either have to adapt (change, or maybe even innovate for a change) -- or give up the top spot in the popularity polls.
Tiesto's never been #1 DJ in the world -- because the entire concept of a #1 DJ makes no sense. Unless you break it down according the specific genre's all the #1 really points to -- is the type of sound that is most popular, not the DJ's actual skill or talent (IMO anyway)
Tiesto's overall impact isn't all it's hyped up to be either. Are you guys seriously forgetting what people like Oakenfold, Larry Levins, Derrik Carter, Frankie Bones, Sasha, Digweed have done for the EDM music scene. These guys have been there a lot longer then Tiesto -- and if you look at the history, you'll see that they were true path blazers. The rest just followed, and did well in their own right.
Tiesto might well be looked upon as a legand in a few years...but i wouldn't call him God, just yet. For the sake of the summer games and EDM in general i hope he drops a well programmed set. It would suck if he played anthem after anthem, especially given the occasion. If Tiesto really is the showman that all his fans give him credit for, he'll realize the enormity of the occasion, and give the fans something they'll remeber for the rest of their lives. |
