Like I said....the best PR wins...not the best DJ. I do think it could be a great addition to the ceremony though, regardless of who was chosen....even if line 1 is true and his excitement is more about the promotion angle then the desire to create a unique ceremonies atmosphere....I hope for the latter but reality is rarely so squeeky clean. |

I dont think anyone was arguing that the poll is a merit of skill/talent. I hope not at least LOL
It'll be interesting to see how everything unfolds on friday. I'm excited. I always catch a bit of the opening ceremonies for the olympics. The fact that Tiesto is doin the music is a big plus :D
I woulda been xtra happy/excited for it had any trance DJ been chosen. EDM at the olympic games opening ceremonies hahaha.. who'd a thought?? |

Yes you are absolutely right and that would kinda suck :( |
LOL, please tell me you're kidding. What do you want, for everyone to shut up so the mighty Tiesto can play a 90 minute set (trainwrecks included) while the worlds greatest athletes walk down the lanes without getting their introduction ? Tiesto's gig should get the coverage it deserves which in a word is - Minimal. The Summer Games are about the spirit of competition, not trance music. If they even spend more then 2 minutes on Tiesto it'll be a great injustice to the hundreads of athletes who have spent most of their careers preparing and training for the moment to represent their country. People who are moaning about commentators speaking over Tiesto's set need a serious reality check. The fact he even gets to spin at the Games is unprecedented. His set along with his presence should remain firmly in the background while the main elements of the games the participants are highlighted.
I'm sure some Tiesto freak will record his set -- so i wouldn't start shedding tears just yet about missing his once in a life time performance.
 |

wow! relax kid .. it was a joke .. I agree with you, what would suck is if they don't focus on the athletes whose moment it is!. No need to start drama just because a dj you don't like is getting such a honour :haha: :haha: |

wow -- i didn't think i was getting really aggrevated, but thanks for the tip, kid. I'll take it into consideration. Oh, and to say that i'm starting drama because some DJ I don't like is getting this great honor -- please. Take a minute to think about how ridiculous that sounds. Only someone who already rates Tiesto highly would consider it an honor. I think it's a mistake. No DJ should get to spin at the opening event of the Summer Games. For a moment that will be seen live around the world, the only music that would be fitting in my opinion is LIVE music. Not a 90 minute set with 50% Tiesto and Black Hole productions. In any case, he's got the job, and good luck to him. It's not Creamfield, and it's not Magik 7 Live in Amsterdam -- so i hope he delivers something worthy of an event that comes around only once every 4 years.
Now run along go and vote Tiesto #1 on DJ Mag Top 100 poll and tell me i'm jealous of all his success, cause quite frankly i don't give a .
As far as Trance DJ's are concerned.
PVD > J00F > Armin > Ferry > Tiesto ( IMHO of course )
Decipher and Assimilate if you can. Cause that's all the Drama i'm adding to this thread. |

I keep getting visions in my head... the MC in Energy 2000, introducing the flying dutchman in the opening ceramonies screaming....TIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
and the athletes look and each other and say WTF? |

It's crazy eh? But this is exactly what I mean when I talk about "hero worship." I have two roommates who are so excited about the summer olypmics that I'm damn near ready to puke, but die-hard Tiesto fans are worried that commentators might *gasp* talk about the olympics instead of give Tiesto his precious air time!
There is one, and only one way that this will leave Tiesto with any credibility whatsoever. That way is if he is NOT made the focus of the event in any way or form. And guess what - olympic organizers are commentators are not diehard Tiesto fans, they chose him because he's popular on the mainstream circuit and are more than likely going to treat him that way, and not like a musical god.
As a point of interest, I'd be very curious to know what Tiesto himself thinks in terms of whether or not he should be given significant recognition and/or airtime. His fans on tranceaddict may think he deserves it, but I think that the athletes and the true olympic supporters would feel quite insulted by it. |

I don't think anybody seriously meant that Tiesto should be shown for more than 5 minutes throughout the broadcast. I'm sure Tiesto himself realizes very well that the focus WILL NOT be on him during the proceedings.
This event is indeed about athletes. |

One more time for all those who think that a DJ is not appropriate for the Olympic Games: Why was a DJ chosen to perform?
| quote: | | The President of the ATHENS 2004 Organizing Committee, Mrs. Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, heralded the announcement of Tiësto’s participation, saying: “Our Ceremonies will include unique Greek artistic elements along with modern and international perspectives. While it is path-breaking, it is also natural, that a modern artist like Tiësto will contribute to the celebration we’re planning on our opening night. We welcome him to Athens.” |

Hey, i'm hoping Tiesto delivers. Honestly, I am. Not because* i love Tiesto, or Trance, or even Electronic Music -- but because it's the Olympics, an event that deserves to be ushered in with a spectacular opening ceremony.
starsearcher: While informative, the only reason i can find Mrs. Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki giving for choosing Tiesto (A DJ), is because it's never been done before. Bravo ! As someone who still loves his Trance, I'm glad to see the Greek 'path-breaking' approach in selecting an DJ. I hope it pays off. |
