LOL, please tell me you're kidding. What do you want, for everyone to shut up so the mighty Tiesto can play a 90 minute set (trainwrecks included) while the worlds greatest athletes walk down the lanes without getting their introduction ? Tiesto's gig should get the coverage it deserves which in a word is - Minimal. The Summer Games are about the spirit of competition, not trance music. If they even spend more then 2 minutes on Tiesto it'll be a great injustice to the hundreads of athletes who have spent most of their careers preparing and training for the moment to represent their country. People who are moaning about commentators speaking over Tiesto's set need a serious reality check. The fact he even gets to spin at the Games is unprecedented. His set along with his presence should remain firmly in the background while the main elements of the games the participants are highlighted.

I'm sure some Tiesto freak will record his set -- so i wouldn't start shedding tears just yet about missing his once in a life time performance.

I dont think Tiesto is getting paid for this.
Edit: Nm.....i thought i read something him getting paid. my bad:o

On the 13 August, the biggest celebration of the world begins at the Athens Olympic Stadium. Exactly at 20:45 (Athens Time), the Opening Ceremony of the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games signals the return of the Olympic Games to the country where they were born and revived.

It will be the beginning of a celebration that will last for 16 days, with the Olympic spirit and the athletic achievements dominating and with the athletes’ emotions competing peacefully to overcome themselves.

Concept Creator and Artistic Director of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Athens Olympic Games is Dimitris Papaioannou.
The 40 years old dancer and founder of “Omada Edafous” dance group has stated about his “mission”: “What I have been asked to do now for my country and to memorialise my country makes me extremely proud. I feel fortunate to have the finest calling a man could have”.

In the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Athens participate 8,000 performer volunteers and 2,000 artistic and technical support volunteers, as well as famous artists.

Among them is DJ Tiësto, who will perform his DJ-set live in the Olympic Stadium in Athens for approximately 90 minutes. This will include new tracks, produced especially for the Opening Ceremony, and songs that have been tailored to compliment the spirit of the Ceremony.

In connection with his participation in the opening ceremony, DJ Tiësto said: “I am honoured to be to be part of the biggest sports event in the world. The fact that the Games are returning to their birthplace and to the city where they were revived makes Athens 2004 very special”.

While everything else about the Olympic Games is old-school this year, the music will be decidedly contemporary, at least during the opening ceremony, thanks to a Dutch DJ named Tiesto.

Standing beneath the Olympic flame, Tiesto will perform nearly two hours of dance music -- a mix of original songs, electronically reworked classical tunes and Greek favorites -- as the world's athletes enter the Olympic Stadium for the start of the games Friday night.

It will be the first time a disc jockey will have such a role at an Olympics. And it may seem ironic that a purveyor of this kind of music -- which can have a stimulating effect on the people dancing to it, if they're in the proper chemically altered state of mind -- would have such a prominent place at these just-say-no games.

But Tiesto, a 35-year-old Amsterdam resident whose real name is Tijs Verwest, said Thursday: "I don't think my music is really drug-related."

"I know a lot of types of dance music are -- techno, psychedelic trance. The music I play is very easy to listen to for everybody: 12-year-olds, 60-year-olds, everybody in between. I think that's why they picked me," he said.

Tiesto said Olympic organizers asked him to perform after a show he put on in Athens last September.

"The guy who's responsible for the music for the ceremony was at the gig. He heard me play, he bought a CD of mine, he bought my DVD -- that was a show I did for 25,000 people in Holland," he said. "I did some classical music -- he really liked that idea."

But the opening ceremony at the Olympics, Tiesto said, "is going to be the biggest gig of my life -- the highlight so far of my career."

He had to alter his usual set slightly, he said -- all instrumental tracks, for example, and no vocals. He thinks the result will provide the ideal soundtrack for the young people entering the stadium for the biggest moment of their lives.

"The average age of the athletes is 21, 22," Tiesto said. "They don't want to hear a classical music tape. They want to party -- they're having the time of their lives. They want good, quality dance music."

I can already hear people screaming -- ARGHHHH, THAT TIESTO - He said that "Techno and Psychedelic Trance are drug related"..

Hm.. yeah.. for the unenlightened ones. Tiesto mentioned that Techno is Drug related even 5 years ago in some interview, before he "sold out". It's just his opinion. He even spinned techno at one point.
