well of course the commentators will talk the entire time. as every country comes in, they have to say little tidbits about the star athletes from each country. |

Personally I think......if he approaches this correctly and with a respect to the event.....it may be a very interesting and original addition to the Olympics. The problem with debating on popularity in relation to who is most worthy becomes a circle of irrelevancy. Tiesto is as popular as he is due to psychological herding. THat is the concept the best PR firms employ to attract the "sheep": the vast majority of people who define their preferences based on suggestion and group momentum.
The fact is the "popular" choices are mostly made by ignorant people. The radio phenomenon is a clear example. The Britney Spears of the world relay on the heavy rotation, repetitive onslaught of these and other media to hammer into the brain, their product. Most people do not actively seek out music that is truly relevant to their soul or their outlook thus radio and heavy marketing effectively corral these "sheep" into their retail flock. Popularity is a two edged sword. Yes, he's been voted.....but by who...that is what must be considered.
THose here who genuinely appreaciate Tiesto's work as producer and DJ, I have nothing to say to. Regardless of my opinions, you have approached the love of his music in the right way: out of personal searching, reflection and emotional connection to his sound. But let's all be less naive on what makes someone popular. People vote him #1 because his name has been promoted and his visibility is unmatched to the general public beyond all measure.
But as I mentioned, this leads back to the circle, that being, although popularity does not equate to talent or rare genius it does make him the obvious choice to present a borderline-alternative medium to a world audience who is either completely ignorant to electronic music or might appreciate it as his being the only name they've encountered due to his PR monster machine. |

LOL.....yep you know the type I speak of.
FF: "So why exactly did you buy that Nick Lechey album?"
Sheep: "dunno, I heard his song 5 billion time on the radio and I can't think for myself and all my other sheep friends keep talking about it and....mmmm..oddly it just started to sound good so I bought it...isn't it great?"
FF: "Ok, I'm just going to put this blindfold on you now and then you are going to hear a click...after that you will feel no pain ever again" |

Aaron.. allright.. Let's make a bet.
Come to HMV in downtown yonge st.. And ask them:
1) How many Tiesto CDs did you sell this year?
2) Then ask them: How many Ferry Corsten CDs did you sell this year?
3) Then ask them: How many Paul van Dyk CDs did you sell this year? 4) Then ask them: How many Paul Oakenfold CDs did you sell this year?
.. Repeat the question for any other DJ (Yes, DJ.. Not 2 Unlimited, not Alice Deejay, not Fatboy Slim. DJ !)
I'm willing to bet $50 that Tiesto sold more CDs this year than any other DJ you can think of.
What does this indicate ?? That Tiesto is the most popular DJ right now. Case closed ! |

TIËSTO TO PLAY OLYMPICS
Words: Tom Kihl
In what may be seen as a highly effective launch to his Top 100 DJs '04 campaign - where he could be voted number one for a record-breaking third year - Tiësto will play to a TV audience in excess of 4 billion at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Athens this weekend.
The DJ currently ranked number one in the world by readers of DJmag and djmag.com will play a 90-minute set to accompany the 10,000 athletes as they enter the stadium. The music will consist of new tracks Tiësto has composed especially for the Olympics and special arrangements of tunes from his 'In My Memory' and 'Just Be' albums. No DJ has ever performed at the event before.
An understandably excited Tiësto said of the gig: "I feel very honoured to be part of the biggest sporting event in the world." Going on to expect Saturday's ceremony to be "my biggest achievement to date. The opportunity to perform my music for billions of people around the globe will be the greatest highlight of my life."
We wait with baited breath to see how this will effect the forthcoming Top 100 DJs Poll. The big players usually launch some kind of PR offensive and DJing at the Olympics is certainly a high-profile way to get things started. But will the gig enamour Tiësto's legions of fans even more or will his achievement signal the chance for votes to be cast elsewhere this year?
Voting starts exclusively here on this website on Friday 20th August. Check back regularly for all the latest Top 100 news.
