Canada was born out of the 1867 British North America Act (BNA Act). Unlike the U.K., Canada was to be a federal state, so the BNA Act outlined the division of powers between the provincial governments and federal government. Originally an act of the British parliament, it was brought home to Canada ("Patriated") in 1982. Along with this event, the Constitution Act 1982 was passed.
The queen allowed us to govern our own country without having to go to British parliament everytime we wanted a law changed. Again, it was not her obligation to sign. She, and Britain could have said NO. She didnt. |

Im sure if Courtney love suddenly became queen of england.. you would cringe. Its just a POSITION!
How do you respect her as a PERSON??? How as a PERSON has she achieved something for canada. Not as the Queen.. but as an idividual without title. She didnt sacrifice anything to make canada better? She just sat in a throne all her life. |

And Prime Ministers make sacrifices? At 300 Gs a year i wouldnt think so unless their past profession was as a hockey player...then i could see 300 Gs as being a sacrifice.
I will agree with the fact that terry fox and rick hanson do deserve a spot on our currency. Perhaps in place of that native art refugee boat. At least those two were real heros, non political, and placing them would not be politically correct either. |

On this I disagree.
We pay our PM and MPs way too little.
Maybe if we started to pay them a reasonable amount - we'd actually get some good talent running the country.
At $300k (PM) or ~$150k to $200k (MPs, depending on position) all we're getting is corporate-world flunkies in charge.
What is the incentive for a successful business man, lawyer, doctor, scientist, artist or academic to run for office then they could have the risk of making $150k / year (which is much less than they would in the private sector). Being a politician shouldn't be a charity job. FYI - $150k is peanuts. |

| the whole idea of government was for the common man to be able to run. Obviously that has not occurred in modern day. Perhaps if we changed the rules for financing campaigns it could happen again. Im sick of nothing but lawyers and professional politicians trying to make decisions on health care, the environment and other things they know nothing about. The salary is way too high unless we are actually paying an environment specialist to be environment minister. |

just because you either don't understand or don't like the rich British cultural traditions (monarchy included) that laid the foundations of this nation, doesn't mean the majority of Canadians feel the same way. The British and French have done much more for Canadian culture and identity than multiculturalism ever has or ever will. I really don't see the outright benefits of multiculturalism...other than it forces people to always compromise. And if you think that's a racist comment, you're wrong.
I really don't understand why you're so opposed to Canada maintaining symbolic ties to the British monarchy as a means to preserve that aspect of our idenitity. What has she ever done to you personally anyway? |

You have obviously seen that i have a problem with monarcial systems. They are pointless in my eyes. I do respect the british traditions that have shaped the country i have grown to love....but i still see no point in glorifying this Queen. I hate KINGS AND QUEENS!!!!!!!!! |
