Canadians cut link to monarchy
By Fred Langan in Montreal
(Filed: 31/12/2004)
Canada severed another link with the monarchy yesterday when it announced that diplomats presenting their credentials to the government in Ottawa should no longer address their letters to the Queen.
Instead, they will formally introduce themselves to the governor-general, the Queen's representative.
The prime minister, Paul Martin, said the change was made "to reflect Canada's status as a fully independent nation".
His spokesman, Melanie Gruer, said: "This was done with the consent of the Queen."
Ms Gruer said there was no thought of changing Canada's constitutional links to the monarchy.
But Michael Bliss, a history professor at the University of Toronto, said: "We've been chipping away at the monarchy in Canada for decades.
"Multi-cultural Canada isn't interested in the Queen of England. But there won't be any change until the Queen dies." |

Actually, it does matter to a great deal of people, especially to those who have ties to the people who built this nation. I dont quite understand why the Queen (and future monarchs) can't be a part of Canada's so called multiculturalism. That can be one of the many (actually the majority) of significant contributions England and Great Britain had made to this country.
Why is there tolerance for aspects of various minorities' cultures, yet those very same people for some reason feel the need to tear down part of the English identity? It's quite...hypopcritical. |

Agreed. We are supposed to respect other cultures while at the same time those other cultures dont respect ours.
The "winter play" instead of "christmas play" at schools is a good indication of that kind of horse. |

Well it's all Trudeau's fault. I used to admire that man, but he's the one who opened our doors to everyone, resulting in this mess. I wonder what he'd say now?
Perfect example...my former (thankfully so) friend who is now in my opinion a fanatical Muslim says he should be able to pray at UWO and wash his feet in the bathroom sink (quite disgusting). And there should be no holidays like Christmas because it's offensive to him as a Muslim. So he wants his views respected...fair enough, he's entitled to that opinion I guess. But then I asked him about Victoria Day and its merits as a holiday. His response? Oh the Queen and England. Total lack of respect. I just can't stand it anymore. No wonder Dutch people are flocking to Australia and no wonder France is conducting mass deportations and banning headscarves in schools. It's time to stand up and draw the ing line.
I, however, doubt we will ever attain the resolve to do this. After all, once anyone starts explaining the need to protect the British/French identity and the values that built this nation, they're labelled as crazy conservative nazis. |
