You wouldnt buy a record you dont like, would you? Exactly.
Those who likes it, they buy it. Artists dont expect people that dont like the releases to buy them. Thats what mp3s should be for as I said, for pre listen. If you download something and you dont like it, then dont buy it, thats the whole idea. And whats good and whats not, thats ofcourse totally up to you! |
I partially agree.
But something is wrong with the downloading of 'not-so-good' music. If you think a song is 'not-so'good', i might find it the greatest song ever.
Most people who download those 'not-so-good' songs, will still put them on a cd. And again, the artist gets nothing.
I think every artist that seriously creates music, should earn money from his/her music.
Let's put this back to you:
If I download one of your tracks illegally, because I think it is 'not-so-good' and I don't want to buy it, but I think it is still worth playing every once in a while, would you be happy?
I'm not willing to spend 10 euro's on it, but I do want to keep it. How would I solve that? Right, burn it to a cd, and play it whenever or where ever I like.
Just my thoughts. |

Airbase's argumentation is alright.
Vinyls still have that magic effect, they're the symbol of the dj, and it will take quite some time before everybody can forget them.
Myself i'm a wanabee dj as a lot of people out there, i just don't have money enough to buy everythng right now. But i'm often wondering "vinyls or cds" more & more... 6 months ago i would have said "vinyls, i want to be a real dj" silly statement maybe, but a lot of people do the same one. Seeing the online shops developing, the apealing prices they develop (while vinyls are sooo expensive + you can buy just the version you wanna play), now i really think that's a hard choice... and in the future they'll probably spread.
+ these files don't appeal only djs, but every music lover. As for CDs it's a bit the same, less strongly though... making-costs are still important and prices are not as apealing. |

There are better ways to "pre-listen" if you are planning on buying vinyl. The best, of course, being the hands-on approach where you take the very vinyl your are considering buying out of it's sleeve, and listen to it first hand in a record store. However, even if you are buying online, these online record shops allow you to listen to the track beforehand.
The problem with most people is they are neophiliacs. They need the latest X remix, they need the latest tune by Y & Z before it is even released. |

If pre-listens were just cut up samples (not the whole track) it would reduce illegal downloading.
When i give people my tune samples, they will not be the whole track, no way im loosing out!
There doesnt have to be a VINYL v CD war, as long as they are both available in even amounts everyone is pleased, everyone should stick to what they like and like i said before putting more on the shelf, will reduce (illegal) downloads. |

| You can trash Airbase's music all you want but I'll actually defend him. He was not talking about his music just in general, he was talking about the bigger problem of mp3, labels and stupidity. I mean if the labels had moved faster, they would be making more money than MOS per year. I think it is an interesting question, if the market wants it, then the market gets. The buyer basically sets the authority. |

Why would I waste time downloading crappy music, if I like it I buy it if I like it I rip the vinyl and put it on my ipod if I hate it I go sell it on ebay.
Vinyl will always live its the dj's organ the only thing it wont work with is start up djs who use their two cdj100's and then yes you can find that every single one of those djs wont pay a cent for your great "MP3 RELEASES" especially today with all the p2p programs which are out there...
Vinyl's are the only non pirated way ( unless your rich as f and can afford a vinyl cutter, in that case pm me :-D ) other then that it just wont work. Vinyls will never die and the argument you posed above is just stupid downloading music that you dont like thats like me watching tv for only commercials (excluding the super bowl).
Right now you can go listen to samples of mp3's on 99% of EVERY vinyl site, or you can PHYSICALLY (yes you cant be a lazy ass) goto your record store and listen to the vinyl, the entire thing at whatever quality you rate playing the record yourself at. mp3's only encourage illegal spreading of music.
Don’t get me wrong either, I love your releases and have a few of your released Vinyl’s, one which I actually busted out last night.. but still man its goofy to say that vinyl’s are going to die.
Cheers

Its hard to tell young, aspiring djs that cds/mp3s are bad and immoral etc, when all of thier inspiration/idols are using cds/digital mixing more often than not lately.
The whole reason that alot of people think about djing is because they aspire to be like . Given that, they see these demigods of EDM live and a large majority are hammering cd promos time and time again. What sort of message does that send?
Most lables send out promo cds, as do producers personally, they are contributing to the larger appeal of cds in my opinion, then turning around and wondering why ppl are immitating the big djs and using cds(regardless of how they aquire the tunes on them)
I personally think that if sites like edmdigital and beatport were able to get a larger catalogue of music all in high quality, that the business model works. I for one purchase tons of stuff online, and prefer being able to purchase singles on the spot, download them and have the tune in my cdj the same day. Its an instant gratification as opposed to waiting a week to 2 for records to show up.
Couple that with what seams to be an ever increasing price of shipping on vinyl, and it just makes sense for me to buy digital more than not.
I also download from dcc hubs quite often and go through about 50 tracks a week to see whats coming, keep track of whos style/sound im feeling lately, etc.
As has been stated before if you dont like a track, you shouldnt buy it. And with many sites that dont carry good quality or even full length samples of what you are purchasing, unless youve heard the tune before (where???) how are you to know if youll like it. I have quite a collection of tunes ive purchased thinking "oh his last release was good, ill get this" and hated my self for spending money on a record ill never spin.
This issue of mp3/cd/vinyl is super large and has so many contributing factors. It wont ever go away(mp3) and if I was running a label, I would find a way to embrace it and succeed, thats just smart business.
Turning a cold shoulder and hoping it goes away, or just shouting from your box that it sucks doesnt do anything to curb it at all.
Airbase, good post :) |

No it only shows 5 pages here :D
I don't see some of the replies in this thread are intelligent. They're most prob missing the main point Airbase wanted to point out. And even giving compliments on Airbase himself and his music is plain...
