hello
i want to offer to you all dj's and anyone who like to mix
to do a mixing competition
i wanted to ask if you want to participate the competition
since i want to compete i think that we will need to do few things in
this thread.
first post your opnion on doing this mix competition
and post if u want to be in it.
second we need to choose judges that will not particapate in the
competition and are in the music scene for long time and
knows how a good mix sounds and tracklist is well built.
it is preffered that the judges will have cable connection or fast
connection since i offer for it best to be a fair competition
that the mixes will be on 160kbps MP3 file cuz in RA streaming
it pretty sucks and the mixing is kinda heard lousy.
and one more thing
the mix have to be exclusive for TA forum! not a ready one
u did.
so ppl who want to be judges plz apply here and u mixmasters!
peace.

| quote: | Here are the rules for everybody:
Closing date for DJs: 10th December 2001
Closing date for mixes: 1st January 2002
There will be no exceptions for DJ entry, however exceptions will be made if people are having problems uploading with slower connections. My suggestion is to send your mix to somebody with a fast connection for them to upload.
Mixes must be submitted in 160kbps Mp3 quality, CBR or VBR, no Mp3-Pro files are allowed.
You may mix with:
a) Vinyl
b) CDs
c) Mp3s (no sequencer software)
All DJs must state how they have made their set, ie which formats used.
All mixes must be recorded live, by that I mean no sequencers.
You may plan and practise your mix, but not to the point that it becomes robotic.
All mixes must be uploaded with a cue sheet and tracklist. You may combine both into the cue sheet, but remember not all CD writers support that type of cue sheet so be careful when burning.
Contestants may not also be a judge, you have the choice to be either, not both.
You may download other contestants mixes.
You must mix trance, this rule bends as far as progressive and hard trance. Contestants will be disqualified for extended use of non-trance music.
Mixes will be marked on the following categories:
a) Track selection and play order
b) Beat-matching
c) Transition harmonics
d) overall judge impression and other areas
All sections contain 25 marks, no section is worth more than another.
Mixes will then be given an overall percentage.
You must actually mix to gain marks, snapping together of tunes is not allowed. That is not really DJing.
Judges and Administrators have the right to reserve and change/ammend these rules as long as there is a majority agreement.

| I'm in, I'd also go one step furthur to say NO Mp3 DJs. Only vinyl, I'm still debating about CDs as I never considered myself as a DJ when I was a CD man. If all the mixing is going on-line, would anybody be willing to upload it for me as my 56k sucks ass. |
|

| R-Yeah |
sorry man.
there are alot of ppl who dj with cd's
like me. and i dont have technics or any vinyls cuz in israel
there is no decent record store only cd's
and cd's i mean not like 2 discman when u dj to 8 yrs old kids
i mean like proffesionel cd players for dj's like pioneer (what i use) or denon or vestax or anything else
another rule that should be is that no COMPUTER DJ's can apply their
mix.
this is a skill contest.
and btw i was at a friend that use vinyls and he teached me some stuff
and its pretty kewl but when he touched my pioneers cd players
he didnt understand how to mix and he spin for like 4 years and his mixes are amazing so i think that cd dj's rock also!. |

OK, I see your point.
So it is CD and Vinyl DJs only.
That means you have to have dual players (TTs or CDPs) and a mixer, all in one CD units are allowed.
CDs and vinyl are a totally different ball park, personally I find CDs easier to beatmatch with but harder to manipulate than vinyl.
I would also like to impose another rule, but you have to 100% agree with it. People are not allowed to use BPM counters, for the less experienced ones among us they can perfect their mix, but not do it by using BPM charts and counters. It has to be pure musical knowledge. So if you have a BPM counter put some black tape over it, and hide the charts. I don't have either, but I think if some of the better DJs in here, like DJ Dawn for example, who do it on pure skill, it seems unfair by those who cheat. |
|
|
| R-Yeah |
man u r so out of it
that rule cannot be done.
BPM counters is stupid as the same as a dj want to do a set
he mix and then write down the pitch if its - or +
its the same like BPM counting
u cant do this rule cuz prob not everybody will do it.
the thing here is to see how ppl mix how they enter the 2nd song
and their mixing skills + tracklist selection.
even if u beatmatch from advance u need to know to mix and where
to enter your cueing .
and hey why me and Luke needs to argue alone! come on ppl
say what u think about the idea! |

about the judges, ... why do they have to be chosen ???
Why don't let everybody listen, and let them make a ranking from 1-. Judges have to download and listen to ALL the mixes, and need to provide comment.
It's in their best interest that they have cable or something like that.
Look at me, I'm not in the music scene, I'm not a producer, I don't have tables, I'm not a DJ, i just LOOOVVEEE a good mix, and I know what a good set should sound like, I can hear errors, ... I know a lot of DJ techniques, and I consider myself to have a fairly good knowledge of dance-trance-club music.
Take this one in consideration please

Well, i think this idea is really tough to follow through. Because mixes are really subjective as to what makes it good.
I mean, people will prolly be spinning very different styles of music, like progressive, hardtrance, epic trance, a mix of different genres, etc.. and judging will be very difficult, as what one person might find to be a great mix, another will find boring. Its like art.
Also, the rule about no mp3-dj'ing and no beat counting... how are you gonna impose that rule? If you're just looking at how well the mixes are made and how the tracklist is built, does it matter if the dj uses mp3? "No Skill" you say, but you also say Dj Dawn is "pure skill". Don't forget, Dj Dawn uses traktor with his turntables, cuz some songs he just can't get on vinyl... great november mix btw, i just love it. :D
Besides, you won't even know if someone used mp3's and a beat counter.
Anyways, just my thoughts about your idea. |

Whoa, sorry but it was just an idea, helps sort out the men from the boys (i can see i'm going to get flamed again  ).
About the Mp3 mixing, it rally is simple compared to vinyl or CDs, but I do the same sometimes, when I can't get a song, but I just burn it to CD and mix from there.
I've done my mix and my bass EQ for the whole mixer has just broke during the first transition, but you wouldn't know if I hadn't have told you, my m8 has listened to it, he's 26 and been DJing since he was my age, he couldn't tell, so I'm happy with that.
Also I think we should allow cyrax to be a judge.
This mix has been cleaned up by me, trying my skills at mastering is getting better, I get bored after 20 mins or so, so the best quality tends to be at the start.
Tracklist and format:
Push - Univesal Nation 99 (Ferry Corsten Mix) - Vinyl
Mauro Picotto - Lizard (White Label) - Vinyl
Gouryella - Gouryella - Vinyl
Svenson & Gielen - Twisted (Svenson & Gielen's Energy Mix) - Burned CD
Silverblue - Step Back (Blue Sky Mix) - Vinyl
Kay Cee - Unsolved Mysteries (VIP Instrumetal (I Think)) - Vinyl
Cygnus X - Superstring (Future Breeze Remix) - Burned CD
Lost Tribe - Gamemaster (Signum Remix) - Vinyl, only got it on Thursday
Tony Walker - Field Of Joy (Flutlicht Remix) - Vinyl, labelled as Fields Of Joy, I've been told that there is no 's' but can somebody confirm it
Dumonde Vs Lange - Memory (Vocal Mix On White Label) - Vinyl.
It is only 45 minutes so that I can easily put it onto tape. |

for now ppl will post
- what they think about the competition
- how they want to be in it, as Judges or To compete
for genres of music i think we should decide the type of the genre
when we will see there are ppl who want to join this competition
lets get it running first and then we will see.
peace. |

OKAY, does somebody want to put my mix online for me as using a 56k to upload 51.4MB (54,000,849 bytes), is quite a chore, I reakon about 7 to 10 hours, as I can only connect for 2 hours at a time and I can see some failures happeneing. Is there an upload resuming thing or will I have to split it into 10MB parts. Please somebody on Cable or better in the UK, I will send you the CD, Mp3 and audio if you upload it for me.
OKAY Cyrax, talking percentages, what would you consider the trackist on face-value? |
|
|
| Cyrax |
Djeezes, I'd say I'll upload it for ya, If you don't mind mailing it (on cd in MP3-format) to belgium ...
*edit* sorry, did'n't see yer question.
=> MAN, If you can mix those tracks together, it would be a mix I would really, really enjoy. These are all phat tracks man. Tracklist percentage i'd give it at least 80% !!! Too bad it's only 45 min, but hey, if it's a bangin, hard set full of energy (my favourite style => RETRO !!), those 45 minutes aren't a problem ...
