now from the posts on the last page i'm starting to get the feeling that people wwho would use mp3s exclusively might get screwed over. boy_luke, you did allay my fears about that, but i'm still paranoid that the top 3 winners will be anything but mp3 mixes.
i just hope the judges can put their bias away (whatever it may be) and judge strictly to the guidelines. if any personal bias is found to have been entered into the decisions, then i'm gonna cry foul...
|
maybe they should be anonymous when the judges listen to them, and the judges can pick which is best without knowing the person who mixed it or what he used... and that won't be revealed until the final results. |

wicked idea, if someone can figure out the LOGISTICS of it... hrm..
also that doesnt leave to be discrepant btw mp3, cd and vinyl mixes. (again i raise the point that mp3 "djs" have an infinitesmal variety of tracks to choose from):) |

well most mp3s are vinyl rips anyways. so if its out on mp3, its out on vinyl. i mean, fi you disqualify an mp3 mixer who has 300 mp3s to choose from, are you also gonna give the boot to they guy with 400 vinyls?
you can't make this thing completely fair, unless you make everyone use the same equipment and choose from the same box of vinyls. |

well, it will require a higher level of effort and organisation, but if we really do want to do this, we could have one person, like r-yeah or someone, be the head co-ordinator.. we all send our mixes to him, he renames all the files to mix-01.mp3, mix-02.mp3, mix-03.mp3, etc... and he keeps a list of which number belongs to which mixer. he then puts them up on a server, and the judges can download and give a score to each number. at the end, the co-ordinator will post the results with each number corresponding to each mixer. :P
that is the best way to remove personal bias ...
again, the mp3 debate.. well, if u really need a song from mp3, just hook it up to your mixer, but also ppl who have more money will be able to get more vinyl, better mixers etc, so its a totally uneven field. we'll just have to live with it. |

Once again, there will be no bias, each mix is rated on each section equally to another. Although people who enter with sequenced mixes will be found out by me before the judges even download it. I aldo dunno how you can say that vinyl DJs have as much choice as Mp3 DJs, I have been collecting vinyl for 2 years, I have about 250 vinyls. Whereas I've been collecting Mp3s for 4 years and for free, I have 20GB of Mp3s, yet a percentage are livesets but I am a 56k user so single Mp3s are easier to download. Most of the vinyl I buy is due to I like the song through download of Mp3s. So if anything Mp3 DJs have the edge due to song selection.
This debate will end here, that is what the rules are for, the main reason for format awareness is to stop sequenced mixes. Here they are again:
Closing date for DJs: 10th December 2001
Closing date for mixes: 1st January 2002
There will be no exceptions for DJ entry, however exceptions will be made if people are having problems uploading with slower connections. My suggestion is to send your mix to somebody with a fast connection for them to upload.
Mixes must be submitted in 160kbps Mp3 quality, CBR or VBR, no Mp3-Pro files are allowed.
You may mix with:
a) Vinyl
b) CDs
c) Mp3s (no sequencer software)
All DJs must state how they have made their set, ie which formats used.
All mixes must be recorded live, by that I mean no sequencers.
You may plan and practise your mix, but not to the point that it becomes robotic.
All mixes must be uploaded with a cue sheet and tracklist. You may combine both into the cue sheet, but remember not all CD writers support that type of cue sheet so be careful when burning.
Contestants may not also be a judge, you have the choice to be either, not both.
You may download other contestants mixes.
You must mix trance, this rule bends as far as progressive and hard trance. Contestants will be disqualified for extended use of non-trance music.
Mixes will be marked on the following categories:
a) Track selection and play order
b) Beat-matching
c) Transition harmonics
d) overall judge impression and other areas
All sections contain 25 marks, no section is worth more than another.
Mixes will then be given an overall percentage.
You must actually mix to gain marks, snapping together of tunes is not allowed. That is not really DJing.
Judges and Administrators have the right to reserve and change/ammend these rules as long as there is a majority agreement.
As of 29 November |
