Dozens of diehard David Beckham fans queued for more than 12 hours to meet the former England football captain at a book signing event in London.
Becks showed that despite being dropped by new England boss Steve McClaren he still has star appeal as crowd of more than 500 people waited patiently to get their copy of his book Making It Real.
Some ardent fans even arrived before dawn yesterday to make sure of their place at the front to meet Beckham who scored for Real Madrid the previous evening.
The entire basement floor of Waterstones book store on Oxford Street was packed with fans jostling to share a few words with their icon.
Battling Becks showed no signs of the fury he felt at being axed by McClaren as he autographed books for two hours, joking and posing for photographs with fans.
A Waterstones spokesman said: "Everyone seemed very excited to have Becks here tonight, a very good crowd turned out to support him.
"When I turned up for work at 8am this morning there were already a few dozen people waiting outside.
"It built up all day and there would be about 500 fans waiting downstairs now, the basement is completely packed out.
"We've probably sold over 600 copies of the book."
One young fan, Walter Davidson, 14, of Leytonstone, east London, where Beckham himself was born, said: "I'm so happy to have met David Beckham.
"He seemed quite relaxed, he just asked me how I was doing.
"He may no longer be England captain but he will always be a legend to me. I think he deserves another chance to make it back in the team."
The sleeve notes of Making It Real state that Beckham has "fulfilled his ambitions" by returning to his roots to teach football to youngsters
