Why is everyone thinking they can probably beat Japan easily? They are pretty damn good. |
Every team in the World Cup is "pretty damn good". Japan are a good side but any of the finalist could beat them on a good day, including Australia.
I don't think anyone thinks Japan can be beaten easily, it's more like they're thinking it wouldn't be impossible, like the task against Brazil. |

Australia can definitely beat Japan. Japan lacks a quality finisher. They do have a deadly midfield combo of Inamoto/Ono/Nakata though.
Croatia is not the dark horse team it was back in 98 and at Euro04, they showed that they had big weaknesses that I do not believe they have solved.
Brazil does have weakness... Roberto Carlos and Cafu aren't that great of a defender. Question is whether Emerton and Kewell can exploit that though.
I have faith in Hiddink. All Australia needs is 5 pts which is very doable. :) |

I still believe Australia have to put their strong performance up to par to challenge. Japan have made several world cups already, they are a strong side. I think everyone thought the same thing when Austalia challenged Iran in melbourne and now both teams are stronger than ever.
Iran challenged Japan to the qualifying stages of the world cup and they were on par.
But who knows, anything is possible. |

he doesn't need to prove himself in that regard.
it's the team that needs to prove that they can work together against stronger sides. |

I definitely think it's not that bad an occurrence to have Brazil in the group. Brazil are not invincible but they will be tough first up for all three of the teams. Despite their incredible offensive powers a goal-less draw against them is not out of the question. As has been mentioned before, the order of play has fallen favourably for Aust.
As for the Japan or Croatia question, I'm inclined to believe that Japan will be the tougher team. Their sheer fitness and aggression throughout the 90 min., as was demonstrated in the last Cup, will make them difficult to beat regardless of the fact that they don't have home crowd support this time around. |

well, youre correct if youre comparing them to U12 girls teams ;) i hardly think sides like trinidad & tobago, saudi arabia & togo even deserve to be there, much less be considered "pretty damn good".
anyone remember germany's 8-0 win over saudi last year? thats just an embarrassment!!
i think given how fvcked up the qualification system is, Oz should be happy to be there, anything else from here in should be considered a bonus.
btw i wanna have michael owen's babies  |

Okay, if you want me to be precise, these are the teams that are "pretty damn good" and could beat Japan.
Germany
Costa Rica
Poland
Ecuador
England
Paraguay
Sweden
Argentina
Ivory Coast
Serbia & Montenegro
Holland
Mexico
Iran
Portugal
Italy
Ghana
USA
Czech Republic
Brazil
Croatia
Australia
France
Switzerland
South Korea
Spain
Ukraine
Tunisia
Yes, Trinidad and Tob suck - I was too lazy to qualify my "pretty damn good" assessment.

Woah woah woah, woahwoahwoah. Hold up there. Australia are not there to make up the numbers. The fact that we've been MIA from the World Cup for the past 30yrs doesn't make us a weak football nation. I'm sure England too would have stumbled a few times if their qualifiying campaign had included the likes of The Solomon Island, Fiji and Tahiti, followed by a delightful one off sudden death play-off with a 5th placed South American side that had just been hardened by games against Brazil, Arg, and Co., and played over two legs with the bonus of circumnavigating the globe in the space of a week. Meanwhile, every other nation gets round robins where they can make a mistake a get away with it, against nations nearby.
We can beat every nation in the Asian Confederation. We should fear none of them. We can win against Japan. |

hmmmm. thanks for going to all that effort of explaining that for me, but im thinking someone didnt quite get what i was saying.
"i think given how fvcked up the qualification system is"
(its not the best 32 teams in the world, and there are regions that get to walk into the finals that dont have nearly the potential or talent of the australians, whom have a ty ty qual system) therefore
"Oz should be happy to be there,"
(because the odds have been pretty & certainly inequitable)
"anything else from here in should be considered a bonus."
(coz its a fvcking tough group which i dont think australia can progress from, and merely being in the cup and playing against sides like brazil & croatia in the pinnacle of football competition is fvcking ace).
of course oz can beat japan. another prediction- japan wont win a game. i dont see how one good performance and suddenly everyones rating the japanese powerhouse.
same page now? excellent ;)
edit: whilst im thinking about it, id like to extend a massive grin (:D) to the greeks whom wont be making the trip next year. if i wanted to watch boring soccer id go down to the ground at the end of my street & watch grade C kick mud into each other.
