that is why he is loved. i like a lot of diverse genres and things like oakey happen all the time, to very big names even. Currently experiencing the biggest downfall in music today imo is Children of Bodom. In a sense, its incredibly difficult to stay ahead of the curve as the internet and non-vinyl mixing have exploded. For exclusively non-vinyl DJs such as myself, the time gap between the vinyl releases and the buy-able MP3 releases are getting smaller and smaller, with some labels even releasing the MP3 at the same time or even earlier.
Oakenfold's mixing leaves a lot to be desired from the purists out there, but it has never gotten in the way of my liking of his "golden-age" sets. Times change. People change. Its hardly a reason to hate someone though. I do all that I can do, which is not anticipate his new releases. |

I've seen Oakenfold three times live:
UMF7, Miami, FL
Moda, Clevland, OH
Decadence III, Guvernment, Toronto, ON
The first time SUCKED. Paul was mixing badly, track selection was poor (his peak seemed to be Traffic, and tiesto played an hour after he finished!) And what made it the worst - Oakey didn't acknowledge the crowd at all. I think at one point he even sat down during the set away from his equipment.
The second time, it was OK. He played a lot of really energetic stuff, wearing us all out before Ferry Corsten even started playing. He played remixes of classics, like DJ shog's 2005 remix of greece and the tektonic remix of viola. He played some breakbeats that seemed misplaced - i wasn't feeling them. He played tiesto's traffic (albeit cameo sicada remix) and pretended like it was his production, stopping the decks at the buildup in classic oakenfold manner.
I'll be honest, I pretty much considered Oakenfold a joke among DJs. I would go to an event solely to laugh at how ridiculous he would be when he embraces the air and the heavens shine glory upon, playing Traffic to a mindless and igorant crowd.
But the last time I saw him, at Decadence III in Toronto, I thought his energy and track selection was so much better. The mixing wasn't the best, but it was extremely energetic, and the manipulation of the crowd was great. Oakenfold has been labeled (by myself too) as a primadonna and an elitist as a "rockstar" DJ, and I have seen this in the live performances and videos I've witnessed.
But this time, Paul was extremely into the crowd, and very friendly. Signing (many) autographs in the middle of his set from people in front of the booth. he was dealing with all of this autographing and people throwing balloons and beachballs nearly on the mixer, girls dancing behind him, etc, etc. All of this going on, and being a true professional and the legend that he is simply from his ing age (25?), he mixed and built up a quality set like it was nothing. Sure there were a few technical mistakes, but nothing HUGE, like I heard at UMF7 and it wasn't even a problem. In fact, Oakenfold was so happy, that my friend and I even bought an Icepop and offered it to him, at first being cynical about the entire thing, doing it in a mocking way, or just to get a reaction out of him. But instead we have video of him laughing, smiling, and asking us if it really is for him or not. Totally into the crowd - no aloof behavior or anything, no primadonna. It really made a big impression on me.
I wonder if all these years of Paul somewhat in the shadow of other superstar DJs has helped him at all. I'm definitely not an Oakenfold fan, but I would say that my hopes for a better Oakenfold are rising. |

Actually agree. His mixing wasn't stellar but his programming was simply amazing.
And this is the same situation Tiesto is in right now. He's never been stellar as mixing but back in the day his programming was so amazing! Now the majority of the time his programming is bleh and so that plus his subpar mixing really stands out. Every once in awhile you hear about some amazing set he did (ie. Tiesto @ Heineken Music Hall in December 2005), but listen to it and his mixing is still whack. Just the track selection is so good you just don't care. |
