I'm not going to try to persude you that Oakenfold was anything more that he was (an amazing crowd-pleaser and performer) so please don't try to persude me that he was crap :-) |

Buuuut...I'd go back a few years further. Oakenfold really tanked after Tranceport. That was the beginning of the end, when he was no longer interested in playing interesting tunes, but just selling the years chart toppers in a shiny compilation with boring mixing.
He has done some decent mixes. I would say his Global Underground in NY was his last good one. But even there you could see the wheels were beginning to fall off the operation.
Truly a man that has fallen from grace. Now, is that his fault? ....or the scene's? |

In Oakeys defence, his mixing has always been .
He used to play big tunes though. I discovered a tune called Jon Vesta - Gull in his essential mix at lotherton hall 1999. Man that is a tune and a half! Like 5 years ahead of its time... |

Don't argue from a position of popularity. It's a logical fallacy. Because many people love him doesn't mean he's good. Rather, it speaks more of the kind of music he played to attract such a following--that being, music that is safe, diluted, boring feather-lite pap, perfect for mass market digestion. |
I already knew it was pointless to argue with an Oakenfold hater before I made the post. If you are comfortable with the fact that discounting him as crap shows your ignorance then I don't have a problem with it either. |

It really is like ramming your head against a brick wall, isn't it? Keep putting your head in the sand to blind yourself from the truth. Refuse to admit that you've been duped for several years by an empty, shallow product full of too much hype and PR.
Everyone has already admitted several times in this thread that Oakenfold has never been a very good mixer. So what, pray tell, was so good about him? That he was the first DJ you heard?

Oakenfold to dj'ing is as Michael Jordan is to basketball. Used to be considered the best....was the best....and well he'll be ok for awhile........
He doesn’t score the most points/woo the crowds like he used to....but he still sells the tickets and brings the excitement....
Will always be respected as one of the best and will always bring the media/ticket sales.....
people often forget Oakenfold was turning records to dust while they were ting their diapers....whether or not that means anything to them is one thing...but I believe in giving respect where respect is due...regardless of how well they can put one beat on top of another. With that being said, I would love to see him back on top, he is one of the reasons why I listened to trance. |

I remember discovering that tune too! ...on a little DJ mix by a relative no-name called Robert Oleysyck, though it was released a year later, heh.:p
PS: That Michael Jordan comparison is HILARIOUS, just because it's so ing mis-realized! Jordan was the consumate professional athelete, because he always worked to improve on every single weakness he had. He already knew he was a weaker outside shooter, so toward the end of his career he worked diligently to improve upon it. Same with his defence. If there was even a small element of his game he felt was missing, he'd spend countless hours working on it until he was the best in the league at it.
If Oakenfold was THAT dedicated to his profession, he'd be spinning circles around guys like Hawtin or Z-Trip. Instead, he just stuck to his initial strengths (track selection; PR management) and rode them for all it was worth. It gained him the superstar limelight for a while, but then without him working to improve on his weaknesses, his star faded as new cats with those same strengths moved in as The Next Hot Ticket.
Quite like Shawn Kemp, actually. ;) |
