:happy2: jokes.
But all jokes aside.
Today...I took a kid for Take A Kid To Work Day. He was 14 yrs old. I told him about this story (he hadn't heard), and he's also addicted to the exact game. Trust me. I feel bad for this kid.... but like..srsly...[edit] what's up with the parents? What about monitoring your kid's online/video gaming addiction? Are you all so busy that you can't dedicate some time to your child that you prefer to have him spend his every waking second on this game? Are you really that busy that you can't take walks with him, talk to him, go outside and throw a ball with him?
I know it's hard, but spending quality time with your kids is key to preventing stuff like this. |

Now if that age limit were actually enforced, I'm sure that the entire industry would suffer greatly. With the global influence that corporations like Microsoft and Sony have, it would be virtually impossible to pass such laws. |
Suffer greatly? Look up the player demographics first. Kids do get asked for ID in all major chains. Flea markets and other indies don't give a rats ass unfortunately. Kids will still find ways to buy smokes, booze and porn too, but parents have a role to educate and teach their values on to their children to lower the risk of harm for things they are not ready for. It's deeply saddening they learned in the most terrifying way. They are suffering tremendously. |

I don't think we can go as far as to saying that parents don't care.
I think the biggest issue here is that parents are not educated on the kind of violence that are portrayed in video games.
I'm sure there are a lot of parents out there who know what GTA is, but have no idea the extent of gameplay. Do you think that most of them know that you can pick up a hooker, let her give you a blowjob and/or sex, and then you kill her afterwards to get your money back?
I don't think so.
But hopefully parents will start to understand a bit better with a lot more media attention focused on these kind of things.
Obviously every kid is different and parents should know whether or not a certain video game would be appropriate for their child.
I think education is the key thing here.
PS. The new Call of Duty is coming out next week! (On Remembrance Day which is a little inappropriate I think)...

+1....although it shouldn't be hard to spend time with your kids....for sakes...they are your kids....you should spend time with them.
Unfortunately, too many families have both parents working long hours and driving over an hour to get to and from work. People are spending over 12 hours a day commuting and working....its stupid. Kids are being left to sit at home and wait for a parent to come home and feed them so the kids spend that time playing video games or doing other crap in the house. By the time the kid eats dinner and does homework its too late to go out and play so they play more games in the house.
Unfortunately, the parents are letting the television, computer, video game parent the kid....heck the parents have so much to do when they get home that they don't have time for little Timmy. So little Timmy has to keep himself quiet by playing his video games. |

I am really curious about the cause of death. |
Cause of death in this case appears to be stupidity.
Look, you can all call me insensitive & all the rest, but bottom line is that the reason this kid died is because he ran away from home.
Ran away from home b/c he wasn't allowed to play a video game.
I don't know about anyone else here, but when I was 5 I was already smart enough to know that running away from home b/c I wasn't allowed to do something like play video games is ing stupid.
Especially when you run away & try to stay hidden for days with the temperature dropping into the single digits or less night after night.
So, if he really ran away b/c of video games & stayed hidden b/c mommy & daddy wouldn't let him have his x-box, then clearly to me, the cause of death really is stupidity. |

Which is something none of us will ever truly know.
We only know what the media reports or what tha family admits to. There could be other family dynamics involved.
It is stupid to run away. When I was young I packed my bags, until I realized it would be cold and that it was a bad idea... and I was younger than 12...
It so sad that this had to end this way, but we all knew it was coming.
Prayers to the family.
I really hope that this has raised a lot of awareness about the dangers of video games. Some good can come out of this... |

Like I said in a post a while back, this case has nothing to do with the 'dangers of videogames'.
The fact is, the parents took away something that the kid really liked, and he got upset and ran away.
This item could have easily been a stuffed animal, a book that he was obsessively reading, his computer, a movie, etc. The fact that the thing they took away was a video game is irrelevant.
Yeah, maybe some kids do play video games too much.... not to try to sound like an idiot here, but some video games are just extremely fun.. you cant just demonise video games because they are a lot of kids favorite toys
Yeah parents should limit the amount of video games their kids play but we cant go out and say that video games are some sort of huge danger to kids just because of this one case. This was an extreme and very unfortunate event and is not something common to video games in general. |

That's also another point to raise. If the kid ran away cause his parents took away his xbox, it is likely to assume that he could have ran away because his bike was taken away, he was grounded, etc. which is showing how immature he is.

Yeah this is what I was trying to prove in my above post! People are just using this as an easy way to attack video games! Its not like he was trying to emulate something he learned from Call of Duty 4 by running away from his parents into the woods! |
