I heard an interview with the father on 640 a couple of days ago..he did blame the video games..said that his son had spent the whole summer locked up in his room playing this game....he also said that he thinks his son may have been targeted to play on a team where kids can make up to a 100000 grand for a tourney..OR that someone lured him away with promises of such a thing without the best of intentions...
so according to the dad..the kid is either out there living the high life OR
he's being molested by someone who offered him the high life.. |

I hope you mean a hundred grand and not $100 million. Either way, who the hell would believe you could get paid that much to play a game? Who's footing the bill and what exactly do they stand to gain!?
Sounds like the real problem here, as usual, is rampant stupidity and an astounding lack of parental beat-downs. |

i meant $100 000 ...
either way, there are a lot of issues that stem from this case..parents really have to be more vigilant..and i realize that we're dealing with a different breed of teenager but you should have SOME control..letting a kid lock himself up in the room all summer to play xbox is crazy....
i do hope it turns out for the best and they find their son...i can only imagine their anguish...:sadgreen: |

Exactly. His parents should blame their own lack of parenting skills, not Xboxes. But of course today no one ever takes responsibility for their own kids - it's always someone else's fault, even if that someone else is an inanimate object. |

Personal Example:
my friend was the irc/web admin for the counterstrike clan jaxmoneycrew (JMC) at age 17. This opportunity was possible because he made online friends on irc while playing counterstrike in the early days. As the admin, he got flown to Dallas for all the big invitational tournaments that the clan went to and was pretty much taken care of the whole time, since the owner of the clan was some rich guy. I'd say over a 3 year period he went 5 times and probably had close to 20grand spent on him. Not bad at all! he didn't even have to play! hahahah
Popular example: Thresh winning John Carmack's Ferrari
Starcraft is also another good example of a game with "professional players"
and obviously world of warcraft with countless companies set up that sell gold and player leveling for real money
but yeah overall, bad parenting is what needs to be addressed here |

I dont understand how video games are being blamed... so what Microsoft made an awesome video game system, and COD4 was an awesome game that the kid really liked. The reason the kid ran away is because his parents took away something he really liked. The fact that the thing he really liked was an xbox is irrelevant.
Xbox shouldnt be punished for creating a gaming system that kids like too much. |

Spending lavishly on geeky tournaments and offering huge cash prizes to the winners are two very different things. And $20K over 3 years sounds a lot less ridiculous than a $100K lump sum - it's pocket change for the middle class.

That was (a) widely publicized, and (b) put on by the obscenely wealthy creator of the game. Again, not at all the same as some sketchy prize offer by some dude on the internet.

Indeed. The parents should be the ones locking them up, with a sewing machine, and forcing them to make shoes, with savage beatings administered every so often to remind them that their performance is being closely monitored.

You win for dumbest post in thread. The reason he ran away was because he was an anti-social over-privileged pimply-faced gimp with no discipline or common sense, and his parents let him carry on that way for months before putting a stop to it. |

I was just trying to prove why 'Xbox' was totally irrelevant to the cause of this whole problem, nothing more. Get over yourself; you really seem to give off this 'I am intellictually superior to everyone on this forum' vibe. |

If that was really your only point then I apologize - it read to me as though you were criticizing the parents for the only right thing they did. |
