Awww, all you mud gamer geeks warm my heart. :) Well, this issue hits close to home, since I was a very avid gamer. Hell, my first website was a fan page for Quake in 1995-96 - Quakemania with a crapload of downloads and mods.
Anyways, having been someone who was immersed into this whole world of multiplayer gaming when it first began (1987) I have to say the parents are NOT to blame - nor are the video games. Sure, back then it was very simple and just a text-based BBS running on MajorBBS software and having about 10 users online simultaneously. Online time was expensive (i.e. $10 = 16 hours of time.. only got cheaper in >$75 increments). Kids couldn't afford to spend much time on there at that rate, lol. However, the multi-player aspect and interacting with others was HUGE - how cool was that? especially back then... Sure, other kids had nintendo but this was a whole other experience.
I think what Skipper is trying to say is that games now are much more immersive in terms of disrupting an individual's day-to-day life. Whether it be Second Life, Evercrack, the Sims, COD or whatever, ppl can get drawn into those environments and get addicted to them. Accessibility is much higher now - high speed internet access, xbox, ps3, you name it -- gaming is a huge draw and there will always be a % of people/kids who have addictive personalities and succumb to these distractions.
Hell, you can get addicted to almost anything online -- I get at least a handful of requests every year for me to suspend people's accounts so they can stop posting and get back to their studying - especially during finals. |

When I was a kid...I didn't have anything entertaining in my room...my bedroom was to sleep in. The Atari and computer were in the basement. If I wanted to plan Atari I had to ask my parents if I could and I could only play when all my school work was done and I showed my parents that it was done. When my school work was done I was allowed to play my pac-man and space invaders but only for an hour or two at max.
Personally, that is more then enough time for a kid to have some fun playing games. The parents should have established a daily or weekly limit of play time from the minute they allowed him to have a console system.
Its just easier to let the kid sit infront of the TV and play games all day then to actually get involved in their lives. |
The only problem with that is, as soon as you move out on your own you may buy a console and play extremely long hours because your parents aren't there to take it away from you. It really depends how responsible, strong willed you are and how your parents raised you. |

You know I didn't even see it in that perspective your absolutely right Swamper. Gaming has evolved big time in the last 12 years or so and who knows what possibilities will present themselves in the next 5-10 years? |

My main point is though: Blaming video games is the wrong thing to blame. |
When someone has an addiction, you can't blame anyone. You can't blame the addict, you can't blame the thing they are addicted to, and you can't blame the people around it.
The parents intervened and the result was unfortunate and unexpected. I don't think there's blame here.
I never blamed video games. I only disagree that the parents should be held responsible for this. They were the ones who tried to take the thing away. |

Not "encourages."
Merely stated that it was not unhealthy or unnatural. |
Nudity and sex is healthy and natural. "Double Anal Drill Team" isn't for a 15 year old. Big difference. A kid who is allowed watching "Ball Gag Gang Bang" at will is going to be pretty ed up as an adult. |

| Bad parents always like to point blame at anything but themselves. |

I remember waaay back when DukeNukeem 3D was out and they had multiplayer on it. People got soo addicted that they would buy a second phone line in the house. I had 2 phone lines and would play it soo much that my friend down the street would start a match and then i would call him using both telephone lines ... that was obsessive...now i don't play any online games.
on a side note.. eagerly awaiting starcraft 2
(i heard a story through a friend that his brother played starcraft sooo much,, during this really important battle he had to take a and didn't wanna leave the computer so he just doo dooed in his pants---worst of them all! ) |
