Pfff, that's nothing. My Twitter will also broadcast how many drinks I had, how many girls I have sexually harrassed in the DJ booth and a list of rejected hip hop and top 40 requests.

overall i enjoyed my 1st piknic. MTL is really lucky to have such an event and such an amazing area to throw it at. I was blown away by the setup and organization of the event.

Music wise, I really enjoyed Pheek. Ambivalent was chill minimal. Barem was excellent and my favorite of the day. On the other hand, Richie did not blow me away. He started hard, but there were no sustained OMG moments. Also, when he played with effects, it felt like the sound level came down on some speakers which made it sound odd.

Luckily, the weather held up all day which was nice considering the weather man was horrible at predicting the day!

i think its awful: anybody can emulate him and play the same tracks...making it easier to find out this stuff...not that everything he's playing is gold...far from...it just takes away from the whole secrecy element of techno that i love...

Not everyone has access to the same tracks that Hawtin has. He has a pretty huge collection + unreleased tracks + custom edits / mixes / etc. Combined with how he actually layers the track / tweaks effects / etc.

Personally, I hate the 'secrecy' aspect of EDM - and think moves like this are interesting.

i don't think it's awful at all. who cares. granted i didn't go through the list of tracks he posted on twitter, i just think it's cool because i haven't seen something like that done on twitter before.

who cares if the secret's out on richie's sets....it's really not a big deal. if djs continue to play these songs and they get "overplayed" and stale, that's their problem. it's up to the dj to continue breaking out hot, fresh tracks.

i agree that the secrecy of a track is sometimes a good thing....especially when it's one that's never really been played before...but for 99% of the tracks out there, they deserved to be shared.

At the end of the day, unless you are doing a Live PA of your own productions - you are still playing someone elses music. People get too caught up in the hype/superstar aspect of the DJ playing the tracks - and the people producing the tracks often don't get enough recognition.

Also, with the state of music today, the rampant piracy / etc - this is a great way to give exposure to new/upcoming artists - hell, any artist really. Chances are if a track appears on hawtins twitter feed - and it is available for purchase, that person is going to see a big jump in their sales (hell - even if its not that track, but just being made aware of a new producer) - and I don't see this as a bad thing.

One of the biggest joys I get out of music - is sharing the music I love with other people. Sharing sets / tracks, recommending new artists / labels and generally geeking out about music. Keeping the "secrecy in techno" is a bit contradictory to that, and I'm happy to see that wall break down even a bit more.

(Mind you, I cant be bothered to follow his Twitter feed - I still think it's neat)

The whole secrecy of what a DJ is playing is a joke imo. I remember seeing DJs way back put stickers on the labels of their records so no one could see what it was. The role of the DJ originally (radio) was to promote records. Obviously, the kind of DJs we listen to now has morphed into the role of entertainer, but they should still be helping to sell tracks. If you've got any skill, you don't need to hide the tools you use... you should know how to use them to make them sound better than the next guy.
I think what Hawtin is doing is great. I'm just curious how he gets Traktor to interface with Twitter.

In this age of piracy, use any means necessary to bring in the dough. This is a business after all.
