| I don't think there's much cross-over between the BC crowd and the Piknic crowd, is there? They both cater to such different musical tastes and types of crowd that I'd be surprised if it had much of a noticeable effect. |

You'd be surprised. Piknic has attracted a lot of curious Beach Club people in the last 2 years. This has had mixed results.
On one hand, it's good for Piknic to have a new crowd, to renew the clientele. There is always the possibility to convert people and to get some new regular customers. On the other hand, it's often not the most....."musically open-minded" crowd. Some of them do get hooked, but most of them come for a couple of visits, don't like the sound, and go back to beach club. The major problem has been the "complaints" from these types of customers. They complain about "having expectations", "wanting to hear house music, or david guetta", and then "pollute" the website's forum.
Piknic did a funny thing this year. They basically started their season with 2 "edgier" piknics: Mr Scruff played jazz, Glitch Mob played drum n bass/breakbeat/electro stuff.
I've been told it was to get the "tourists" out of the way. Apparently it worked since they didn't get as many complaints from closed-minded people. I guess it was a good thing to ascert their musical diversity right off the bat, and they were not going to cater to a single crowd.
Obviously nobody likes every single artist booked by the gang, neither do I. I just skip these piknics and go to the ones interesting to me.
But still I have to respect their integrity in choosing to give airtime to less popular, or less accessible EDM music.
But it is true that most BC tourists come because they heard piknic was nice, or trendy. This Sunday's lineup is not stellar. Although Fairmont is very good, there is no real competition between the two events. This particular Sunday at BC and PE really do cater to different crowds and I do not think Piknic will attract BC regulars with only one headliner, who is also not very housey to begin with. |

What good is there in booking "talent" that no one wants to hear?:gsmile: |

Malek, I know you're just trolling :p
Of course these talents cater to a particular crowd, and a lot of people actually want to hear these talents.
For example, my brother only went to the Glitch Mob piknic. That's the only one that was interesting to him.
Some of my friends only go to the I Love Neon piknics. That's the only one that is interesting to them.
Some of my friends will only go to the Ninja Tune and the Benga/Skream piknic. Those are the only one that was interesting to them.
Now my point was that Piknic could play it safe, like BC does, and have the same music all summer round. They choose to do some "niche" piknics, with music that not everyone will enjoy.
They believe that this will broaden people's tastes and make them discover new stuff.
I am not sure it really does work, but I respect their integrity in choosing to deny the do it anyway, for the sake of doing it. Montreal needs this type of risk-taking. |
