Yeah Avatar ruined Pocahontas for me

+1 on the lit-up plants, that was neat. Also the little floating jellyfish things.

What can we say? The guy knows how to make movies that people will pay to watch.

He probably just needed to recharge his bank account. 1.8 billion dollars doesn't last forever.

I had no expectations at all. I avoided any reviews beforehand, and saw it the day it came out. I know the danger of having expectations, so I avoided its trap. It just had a very unoriginal story. That's it. People who like it are easily blinded to reality by emotion, and because of this, probably believe Fox News.

I went in expecting a basic storyline, and my expectations were met in that aspect. I was blown away by most everything else in the film though, and that's why I enjoyed it. To be honest I really didn't care about the storyline and just wanted to see big epic battles and crazy visuals. Unlike other visual movies (eg. Transformers); this movie actually delivered in some aspects.

He started work on this movie like 10 years ago. Developed his own technology to film it. I doubt it was just to "recharge the bank account" but take cinema to the next level.

The main thing people are pointing at is the facial/body mapping with CGI. Not sure of all the details, but all the scenes where Jake is using his avatar body he is actually acting, and Cameron's technology allowed for immediate review of how he looked on screen with his avatar body. Even if you didn't like the movie, you have to respect the work, the detail, and the brand new technology.

From Cameron himself:
quote:
“The way we developed the performance capture workflow on ‘Avatar’ is we have our virtual camera, which allows me to, in real time, hold a camera — it’s really a monitor — in my hands and point it at the actors and see them as their CG characters,” Cameron said… “It’s this amazing ability to quickly conjure scenes and images and great fantasyscapes that is very visual…When you are doing performance capture, creatively it’s very daunting. It’s very hard to imagine what it will look like. But if you can see it, if you can have a virtual image of what is it going to be like, then you are there.”

quote:
“We turned the set on the soundstage into a capture volume and turned the physical camera into a capture virtual camera, so we were able to integrate CG characters and environments into our live action.” [Cameron said...] “We have people in flying vehicles, and I can see what is outside the window, fed in, in real time.”

Rotoscope with textures.

That's not quite the same. Rotoscoping usually involves drawing over film after shooting it, and applying textures. This technology renders the CGI mapping while it's shooting it.

Ah, that makes a difference... while simultaneously eradicating half the art staff. I can see why studios would love to tout this as some sort of revolution in filming - it's a great way to increase profits.

Actually, I feel like the technology would be more used as a reference for the director to make sure it looks the way he wants it. I'm sure he still spends millions of dollars paying artists and designers to create the initial rendering, and also pour over every last detail making sure everything is perfect.

technology has come a long way in regards to the way that they farm snails, they still taste like though.

Day-am, what are they feeding those snails???
