Not sure of all the details, but all the scenes where Jake is using his avatar body he is actually acting, and Cameron's technology allowed for immediate review of how he looked on screen with his avatar body. Even if you didn't like the movie, you have to respect the work, the detail, and the brand new technology.

From Cameron himself:

Didn't they develop special dual-lens cameras to simulate depth the way humans perceive the world?

That has nothing to do with cinema. That has to do with technology.

cgi looks cool. the movie itself sounds terrible, the blue fags look terrible and it probably is terrible as a whole. it's one of those movies highschool sophomores skip school to see then come in the next day and brag about how bad ass they are to have skipped school for. in 3 months hot topic will be selling shirts and jeans that say AVATAR "DISCOVER YOUR DEEPEST DREAMS AND EMOTIONS"

That's a pretty ing stupid statement. I suppose Citizen Kane isn't an important movie, then.

The one thing I did like about the movie was the ability to capture facial expressions in cgi. It had never been done that accurately before. Now if they just use it well in the future in a movie that does the other 99% of what makes a good film, this movie will have had some meaning for me.

A movie is made up of so many different elements. They advanced technology that helps make up a movie, but this doesn't take cinema as a whole to another level. Their entire movie was based on the technology, and they failed epicly with their characters and plot. It's not a good movie just because they did one thing well and made breakthroughs in that area.

Citizen Kane brought together many different elements of film-making all in one. It's cinematography, it's use of focus, of angles, were all amazing and groundbreaking. But it's the combination of it's cinematography and it's characters, plot, acting, etc, that makes it such a great movie and such an important one.

They made some technological advancements. They didn't change the way movies are made.

No, although from what I've heard the visual composition in three dimensions is what makes the movie groundbreaking. But that's beside the point. The issue I'm taking is with this claim that "cinema" and "technology" are seperate, and advancing one doesn't advance the other. Cinema is storytelling through a particular technological medium. The story might suck, but it would still suck whether it was in a book, a play or a videogame. You cannot divorce "cinema" from technology.

Visually amazing. Really haven't experienced that kind of immersion in a film ever I don't think. We are really close to being able to create whatever worlds we wish in cinema now it seems.

Beyond that, what a ing waste. Seriously 250 million dollars in special effects and one of the most beautiful visual works in years and thats the ing story you want to tell?

I hope someday someone figures out how to make a similar movie that could actually blow my mind. Half way through Avatar I was squirming at the absolutely terrible acting and plot getting in the way of my sublime visual hallucinations. The score is a ing joke as well.
