It's called urban warfare. Palestinian forces can't fight Israel in the field. It's not like they have tanks, jet planes, and other sophisticated weaponry. |

It's actually a battlefield tactic of asymmetric warfare called hugging - the deliberate placement of battle formations closely with civilian non-combatants in order to achieve a spectacle of mass murder. Unfortunately it does little to satisfy an important requirement for guerrilla warfare, which is to keep civilian losses caused by friendly action to a quiet minimum. Even though what they are seeking, and getting to a degree, is a drastic over-reaction resulting in civilian casualties, hugging loses the significance of that because it stages such travesties.
Were it a more plain over-reaction resulting in carpet bombing of a clearly civilian area, the responses would be quite different. But that's not what's occurring. It serves little purpose not to make the distinction between the two. When the end goal of the underdog is so unrealistic and their tactics so egregious - to the point of being quite counter-productive in the end game - there is little chance of developing the sort of public pressure necessary to a successful Guerrilla strategy. Instead, what the Palestinians have achieved is a clearly bifurcated public response, in both the United States and Israel, which applies more pressure for military action than it does restraint. |
