Everyone on the German squad was born and raised in Germany with the exception of three players...

Podolski: Born in a Germanic area of Poland and moved to Germany when he was 2 Years old, aquired citizenship through naturalization...

Trochowski: Born in Poland but moved to Germany when he was 5 and is a product of the SC Concordia Hamburg and St. Pauli Academy's.

Cacau: Brazilian Born, moved to Germany when he was 18, for the past 10 years was constantly looked over by the Brazilian national setup, last year he became a German citizen and given the option to play for Germany, can you blame him?

hmm. well, i think that is still more than other teams. but i dunno. do they really want to be compared to france and poaching players? i know that podolski not playing for poland was a big BIG up by the polish squad and not Lukasz's choice back in the day. so dumb. now they kick themselves in the ass every time he scores for Germany. lol.

I find it much sketchier when someone is born somewhere (or worse, merely their parents are) and they grew up in another country but then go and play for the other one.

If Podolski and Trochowski moved to Germany when they was two and five, respectively, they SHOULD play for Germany.

Watching pro athletes like Lennox Lewis, Greg Rusedski, etc. go off and claim English status when they were developed here is a slap in the face. Lewis won a medal for Canada and Rusedski was a product of the tennis system here. shameful, IMHO.

I understand why athletes will do it if it's easier to excel at the top level and they use it as opportunity...but that's often not the case and it's simply 'preference' or the lure of incentives.

I also respect it when there's a genuine desire to move to, and identify with, a new country. E.g. Matt Bonner (former Raptor) met his gf (wife, now?) here, he spends his offseason here, and said he will eventually retire here too. he is acquiring Canadian citizenship and plans to play for Canada's national team. (and we all know he wouldn't have a hope in hell of making the U.S. team, haha).

Is the Brazilian side any better or Argentinian?

Everyone is descendant from european and/or african origins, so really the point is moot.

If someone believes he's attached more to a nation than any other one, then he should be playing for them. Ethnicity and it's blood trail is so 19th century.

When I was there in 06 we saw a lot of the day games at "Thallasaki" where the beach is just passed the palm tree walkway.
