nah, thats what i love the most about nath. he's had some pretty silly ideas but has had no issue recanting after being presented with overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
Fledz
Just came back from midnight mass. Really more of a tradition for me now with the family but it really did reinforce how pointless and ridiculous a lot of Christianity is.

Religion: Is solely responsible for retarding technological progress because the science behind it went against the prevailing theology.

Nathan, with all due respect, this is a really bad argument against religion - even if by religion all you mean is Christianity. Let's pick the 5 most egregious consequences of your argument if we take it seriously:
  1. Printing: Religious authorities were clearly against Gutenberg's movable types because only monks should be able to copy books under the tutelage of the Church;
  2. Steam Engine: The Pope ordered a decree soon after the Industrial Revolution began prohibiting the steam engines that helped kick off the revolution because only the words of the Church could be vapour;
  3. Aeroplanes: When the news of Santos-Dumont flying over Paris reached the Vatican, the Pope ran around in despair across the Holy See because only Jesus was allowed to ascend to Heaven. To even attempt to do so with complicated machines, or with winged bicycles, was clearly heretic and should be stopped;
  4. Computers: Unbeknownst to most historians, the Vatican ordered the assassination of Alan Turing because of his contributions to computer theory and to British Intelligence Agencies, cracking the codes of well-intended members of the former Holy Roman Empire. There's nothing in the book of numbers about these demonic machines, so they were evil by default;
  5. Elevators: There's nothing in the Bible about lifts either, so no Christian should believe in elevators, let alone step inside one.
Come on, of all their mistakes, this is the one point you pick against Christianity? :p

I hear they really loved birth control, too.

A gun is a gun, by any measure.

yay Atomic Weaponry
yay Crusades

yay Modern Medicine
yay Enlightenment

One might adequately liken the Industrial Revolution to a religion, its faith measured in interest, its cleric class as CEOs, banks as halls of worship - the Almighty Dollar acting as God.

It is all in the manner which power, knowledge and resources are controlled and shared, or the lack thereof - Religion, as well as politics (often hand in hand, Hail Caesar- er.. Praise Jebus) have used this Triforce with neglect and self-serving agenda for millenia. Humans are the issue, not the mottled beliefs which they espouse. Take away the Bible from a homophobe/misogynist/psychopath and these types of people will still find a reason to act in a manner which befits their desires and personality types.

And they were pretty pissed about the Sun not orbiting around the Earth, let's not forget about that. However, to go on and say it's always like that makes as much sense as saying they never cared about science.

1) What is the purpose of religion? To slip in yet another trait that makes one man different from another? Why is it necessary? The only thing it seems to have done is to give many religious people a superiority complex.

2) Throughout our lives, we have been raised on the principles of 'do what makes you happy', yet we are forced to live by religious principles our of fear of being ostracized and , in many cases, killed.

3) Why is it that the countries governed on the principles of religion (middle east) have a vast majority of the population living below the poverty line?

4) Conversely, the most successful people i know (ivy leaguers, self made entrepreneurs, multi millionaires) only go to temples and churches for PR (thus the saying - Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful)

5) Life is short. Why waste your time living it under the pretext that there is a greater power controlling you? The only part of religion that I believe in is the principles of looking out for your fellow man, not because it is in the book, but because its a value that you don't need a religion to enforce, which is why I strongly believe that 'agnostics' , on average, are the most successful people out there. Personally, I scoff at religion, but am a strong believer in 'karma'

6) Why arn't there any modern day gods? In ancient times, we hear of Rama, Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, Mohammed etc. , yet there doesn't seem to be one reincarnation in the modern day. What happened?

7) Isn't there a phrase in the bible that explicitly states that 'money is the root of all evil'?. If that's the case, why do religious institutions ask for donations and have millions of dollars in liquid cash?

8) If god helps those who help themselves, why do we need to pray?

9) Why are we taught that god will violently strike down upon all those who speak evil of him? Is god Kim Jon II or Saddam Hussein?

And one of my favorite quotes:

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime; give a man religion and he will die praying for a fish.

+1.

RELIGION MAKES PEOPLE FANATICAL. ALSO, HE WHO TOUCHES A BIBLE IS SCUM OF THE EARTH AND SHOULD BE STONED TO DEATH.
