True. Redd, honestly, while I completely appreciate your dedication to self-criticism, I think you're better than you think at communicating in English. Nou gets shat on because of the conceits in his declarative language. He offers his sentiments in language which presumes that there is nothing wrong with his position. There is a rhetorical finality to them which begs for flamage. Never mind the fact that there is absolutely no room for tolerance and the fact that his posts are just downright offensive. I've seen Nou have reasonable conversations about topics there is a disagreement on, but his hard line, here, just attracts the subsequent inventories of his deficits. |
Ok point taken on both accounts. |

I think Religion should be dealt with similar to smoking. You don't outlaw it as that would be far too drastic. Instead, you educate people at a young age about what it means and how it affects you. As knowledge about the subject increases and bias from an early age decreases, you will see a reduction.
The more people are educated about smoking, the higher the chance is that they won't take it up or will quit if they are currently smoking.
I see the same thing with religion. As your knowledge, experience and intellect increases, you no longer need it. I used to believe very strongly in God (raised Roman Catholic) but now I don't any more. Why? Because my educated opinion shows how ridiculous it is to believe in most of what Christianity teaches, and I'm sure it's very similar to other religions as well.
As someone who has switched, I find it fascinating that educated individuals can actually believe what modern religions teach. Absolutely fascinating.
I have no issues with believing in the possibility of a higher deity, but to believe the teachings of Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus and so on is frankly laughable.
I think "Burden Of Proof" should always be looked at. Religion claims so much yet it can't prove most of it. Science claims plenty and can prove all of it. If it can't, then the theory is marked as false and people move on. It's not always 100% but it's a lot closer than anything religion can accomplish.

That why I used Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.
If you haven't read it, yet, I highly recommend it. If you have, I think he's instructive of how much human nature drives our behavior. Nine years before Maslow came out with his Hierarchy of Needs, Huxley conceived of a society in which every one of them were met. In spite of this, Huxley's characters still found themselves questioning their world and, in the end, devolving it. It's fiction, but Huxley seems to have a grasp of human nature. As futurists go, he is downright disturbing. |
A very good book, highly recommended from me. We studied it in school, but I didn't really develop an appreciation for it until I graduated. |

I'll just keep fagging it up until you get your inclination back :gsmile:
And, Hal, PKC always had this "Little less conversation, little more action" motto Meat is fond of. The difference is that our favourite Tasmanian likes philosophising in general when it means you're destroying your opponents arguments... reason why I never fail to disappoint unless the other side really screws up :D

I saw a post on Buddhism posted here. Actually there is something to hate about Buddhism in that it is passive. Japanese Zen Buddhist around 10 million supported militarism and provided idealistic justification for it. |
That's precisely why I couldn't take Buddhism for too long, but there's something else that bothers me about it: It's too pessimistic (I can't see how the 4 Noble Truths can appeal to anyone over twenty). Whereas I often feel Christianity makes the very opposite mistake sometimes, I don't think being jaded is any less worse than being way too optimistic. It was a great way of getting rid of a previous Christian bias I had despite my disbelief, but I wouldn't trade a religion for another. |

Are you trying to misunderstand on purpose? What with that is it to not understand? The more you know about smoking, the less chance you start smoking. Because, you know, it's not good for you. And the more you know, the more likely you'll quit, if you're already smoking. |

Because we all know this has been incredibly effective at stopping people from smoking.
Just like sex education has stopped people from having unprotected sex. I'm looking at you Redd. :p
It's not very effective at stopping people from smoking because smoking is addictive. Religion, in a way, is addictive too. There's a reason it's been called the opiate of the masses. Unless you want to introduce an anti-religion patch, I don't think education will help, unless you're actually teaching "religion is wrong" lessons. |

Now you're just trolling. You can't honestly believe that what we've learned about the bad effects smoking has on our health haven't made people not start, or quit?
I guess you were the result of people having protected sex. You're an unwanted child. HURRPEDYDURR :p |

Yes it's effective, because it's not addictive when you haven't even started smoking. The first couple of times you smoke, it tastes like . If you know it's bad for you you're a lot more likely to not force yourself into doing it again and again to get addicted.
Man, I'm just stating the obvious over and over again. |

DAD:
There are Jews in the world.
There are Buddhists.
There are Hindus and Mormons, and then
There are those that follow Mohammed, but
I've never been one of them.
I'm a Roman Catholic,
And have been since before I was born,
And the one thing they say about Catholics is:
They'll take you as soon as you're warm.
You don't have to be a six-footer.
You don't have to have a great brain.
You don't have to have any clothes on. You're
A Catholic the moment Dad came,
Because
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.
CHILDREN:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.
GIRL:
Let the heathen spill theirs
On the dusty ground.
God shall make them pay for
Each sperm that can't be found.
CHILDREN:
Every sperm is wanted.
Every sperm is good.
Every sperm is needed
In your neighbourhood.
MUM:
Hindu, Taoist, Mormon,
Spill theirs just anywhere,
But God loves those who treat their
Semen with more care.
MEN:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
WOMEN:
If a sperm is wasted,...
CHILDREN:
...God get quite irate.
PRIEST:
Every sperm is sacred.
BRIDE and GROOM:
Every sperm is good.
NANNIES:
Every sperm is needed...
CARDINALS:
...In your neighbourhood!
CHILDREN:
Every sperm is useful.
Every sperm is fine.
FUNERAL CORTEGE:
God needs everybody's.
MOURNER #1:
Mine!
MOURNER #2:
And mine!
CORPSE:
And mine!
NUN:
Let the Pagan spill theirs
O'er mountain, hill, and plain.
HOLY STATUES:
God shall strike them down for
Each sperm that's spilt in vain.
EVERYONE:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is good.
Every sperm is needed
In your neighbourhood.
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite iraaaaaate! |
