But rockets launched against Israeli civilians (the attacks that started the latest situation) aren't to be condemned? Or responded to militarily?
After the air strike which killed a chief commander of HAMAS. The initial mortar rounds weeks ago weren't even fired by HAMAS personnel; it was by rogue militia operating in their province. Say what you will about HAMAS failing to crack down on those operating in their borders, but Mexico wouldn't kill one of our generals if a bunch of rednecks popped some bottle rockets over the border of Texas. So of course the Palestinians returned fire, and that was Israel's excuse to step up the air strikes and prepare a land invasion which was thankfully called off by Egypt's mediation.
And on and on and on the cycle goes. But yeah, Israel isn't innocent. Cluster phosphorous bombs aren't dropped for "precision accuracy" or "surgical strikes".

The Israeli military is essentially a terrorist organization. The whole region would probably be markedly better off if Israel was wiped off the map and the land was returned to its rightful owners.

Israeli PR methods:
1. We haven't heard reports of deaths, will check into it
2. The people were killed, but by a faulty Palestinian rocket/bomb
3. Ok we killed them, but they were terrorists
4. Ok they were civilians, but they were being used as human shields
5. Ok there were no fighters in the area, so it was our mistake. But we kill civilians by accident, they do it on purpose
6. Ok we kill far more civilians than they do, but look at how terrible other countries are!
7. Why are you still talking about Israel? Are you some kind of anti-semite?
8. Repeat from step 1

I equate holding land near the borders as preventing the hitting in the first place. It's a proven fact (proved by years of seeing it happen) that whenever the borders change, the Palestinians use land on their side of the new border to launch missile attacks. So if Israel keeps the Palestinians far enough back from the land Israelis live on, all the Palestinians can attack is vacant land.
It's called self-defense, and all nations are allowed to protect themselves.
That's ducking the question.

The main point is that Hamas, regardless of the official Israeli position labeling them as terrorists, IS the government of the Gaza Strip. The US considers them terrorists which is why any government building in the Gaza Strip can be targeted by the IDF, and it also legitimizes widespread destruction of the strip, further compounding a truly staggering and wholly unacceptable human rights situation on the ground, while at the same time obliterating an already fragile infrastructure.
The second, but also equally important point is that Israel has and will commit war crimes. Over retaliation is unacceptable. Apartheid is unacceptable. Israel has been given immunity because the religious right in America deemed it a holy place and they think that a god delivered unto them a "state of Israel". Even on these grounds it's ridiculous and impractical, include the treatment of the Palestinians and the disregard for the sanctity of human life, and human rights in general, and you have the formula of hate, and thus Zionism is described wholly.
Israel's barbaric treatment of the Palestinians has never been a secret.
edit: I seem to have missed this in the main point, but I mean that the popular excuse among Israel propaganda mouth pieces is that Hamas refuses to come to the table, when in actuality Israel refuses to come to the table with them because they say they won't negotiate with terrorists. The major peace talks that happened most recently occurred through channels via the U.S. by U.S. diplomats, not Israelis.
