Regarding the law? I actually believe that, given our inability to ban guns altogether, it's a reasonable approach. It states that:- You cannot purchase a gun the government can confirm you're neither deranged nor a criminal;
- You're not allowed to buy a gun unless you're supposed to (that is, if you're in the military, the police, a private security company, a hunting club, or keeping foreign threats at bay).
That's it. We had something of a problem here with ordinary citizens buying guns only to be outsmarted by criminals, who in turn stole the weapons. It didn't take long until the criminals also outgunned armed citizens as well.
Having guns didn't prevent the military from installing a dictatorship back in the 60's either, as some guerrillas found out the hard way. Having guns is useless when your enemy has tanks and aircrafts.

The police are having some trouble finding illegal weapons, precisely because they have trouble doing pretty much everything, due to all sorts of problems. It's not easy to focus on safety when we need to work on so much else :(
