The only way to do that is for everyone to say their piece and hope that there are others who pay attention and take the time to think about what they have read. I know that nearly everytime we have one of these discussions I get PMs thanking me for taking the time to explain my position as well as other positions that I may not actually hold but do bring some further light to the subject. Usually these PMs are from people that choose to observe rather then take part in these discussions... it's for those people that I take the effort to say my piece. |

I quite often get PMs as well, and for the same reason - though my posts are so rarely genuine of my own feelings towards the matter, and are often just me playing Devil's Advocate, I don't even respond to them as I wouldn't feel right pretending I was seriously representing something that interested them. :wtf: |

The other thing is, when i'm arguing against religion here, I'm very rarely, as Craig has just pointed out, arguing against his position, or that of other honest and tolerant practitioners of various belief systems who, quite frankly, don't bother me in the slightest. When I was younger I prayed before, I thought about faith in a higher power and religion in general. I'm not put off by religions and in fact, I have much respect for the devout who follow complex and fascinating rituals with passion and devotion. The people I am usually arguing against, are those who have continuously hijacked religion to serve themselves. The building of 50 million dollar mega churches across America, making enormous profits, presidents leading nations to war under the banner of God, the banning of a womans right to choose for reasons entirely religious, the persecution of people for their beliefs. These are reasons why I feel I must voice such strong dissent in the other direction. If more people were like Mr. Hazard I doubt I would ever feel the need to get in on this "debate"... |
