We have a church of Scientology in my city as well, and like Josh4 mentioned, I was interested in going in for the "consultation" to find out what goes on.

But then I thought about some of the creepy ass that goes on, and wondered if it was safe. I have yet to find someone who is interested enough to go with me to take a look around.

see thats how they get ya!

This is all bollocks to me. The only reason it gets so much attention is because of the few members Scientology as, many of them are high profile celebrities. The only reason they have so many celebrities is because they put a lot of money into helping them out with their careers. If it was just full of no name people no one would care and we wouldn't be discussing it.

i beg to differ. FLDS doesn't have any high profile celebrities in it...in fact the only name associated with it is Warren Jeffs...and that messed up sect has been in the news for quite some time now.

oh, and who could forget David Koresh too?

Scientology is just as legitimate a relgion as any of the others.

However, I find people's adherence to utter homogeny more abhorable than anything Scientology could ever do. While we're on the subject, just what sort of "freaky ass " has scientology actually committed against people? If I recall from reliable sources, Christianity is the faction responsible for numerous crusades, torturous inquisitions, paramilitant brainwashing and a multitude of other officially-approved transgressions against its very tenants while in the process of maintaining a hegemony of fear and prejudice all over the world. What, pray-tell, has scientology even done to deserve such vehemence towards it? hmm? Baa?

Frankly, it's quite simple. All those things the Catholic church did are in the past now. There is nothing we can do about it, and they no longer commit any of those crimes (except molesting small children). Scientology however has directly cause the death of many, and has blatantly stolen money from countless, many times ruining their lives. The reason why we should discriminate is because Scientology is occurring now, we are aware of its crimes and shortcomings, we are aware of its dangers and we can actually do something about it now. If the Catholic church were doing what Scientologists are doing, then I would be all for banning them too. Scientology is not a religion, I think it is fairly obvious that the only reason for their existence is to make money. They are business, and last I checked when you have a business that steals from people and kills some of them too, they get shut down.

technically speaking, it is:

re·li·gion

–noun
1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

Scientology actually steals money from people? I thought that it just convinced idiots to pay.

maybe not directly stealing, but in the sense that the fear of rejection/death/doom is put into you if you don't pay your "dues" or w/e.

so, if someone has been drawn into their belief system so much as to fork over money for fear of "whatever", then i guess its kind of stealing....i mean, they're using the weak willed . i guess. i dunno really.

Everything that anyone has ever done is in the past. That's just how it works. :stongue:

No, there's nothing you can do about it now, save for destroying the establishment that might just do it again... good luck with that though.

Or maybe you could take "preventative measures" and obliterate any rising religious thoughts which differ from the status quo so as to stop the spread of infectious fanaticism before it starts. Yeah, go try that. The conquest to kill an ideal always ends well, I assure you.

Catholicism is dead in Europe. As such, it has spread to South American Countries and Central African nations where it continues its reign far from the people who could hold it responsible for doing what it does best - vicious tenacity and complete control over people's lives. Does it 'destroy' lives in the same way that scientology does? No. It's not in its best interest to do so. After all, its strength lies int he fact that it takes a hold of people as young as possible, and to do so, it must garner the trust of its reproductive citizens.

I'm not saying I like Scientology or trust scientologists. I am saying that I do not understand people's half-assed justifications in their discrimination for fear of it. I mean, many horrible things happen by people's hands that are taken in the name of religion - why is this one so much worse than the others?

Before this goes any further with the 'business' argument, I implore you to second-guess what is most valuable to a business. If subscription and repeat customers seem at least remotely logical to you, then I don't believe there is a single religion in the world exempt from this, despite their stated intentions. It's not always about 'money' in the form that we know it best.

Scientology is hardly about instilling fear into people though. Perhaps its intentions are what do not sit well with most. It's not a sort of subscription service - of course the church needs funds to function in society - and I'm not even commenting on whether it abuses this opportunity at this point - it's just that when you convince people that all they need in life is the church and their own sense of self-perfection, there's really no need for personal possessions, now is there?

To heal oneselfby means of a truth that is greater than anyone - this is the appeal. Leave fear and guilt to Christianity; it has an extensive history of such and seems to have exerted its influence into programming people to think that is exactly what every religion is about. Scientology offers people an opportunity to know the nature of their true selves much better. Does it actually follow up to this promise though? if I know. But it's not difficult to see why many would be attracted to such a concept.

FLDS is different. they get in the news because of the controversial they say and they had that high profile court case. i mean they protest veteran war hero funerals.. how would that NOT get you in the news?
