Yeah, but I mean, why discriminate?

The only thing this does is heighten the exertion of power by the Christian church and hegemony. And peoples' fear of what they don't know much about is further exemplified in this. That doesn't sound like progress of any sort to me...

I think the big difference is that individuals in traditional faith groups aren't forced to pay for their "salvation."

Sure, there are plenty of parishes/denominations/etc. that request tithing from members, but you'd be hard pressed to find many who'd outright say "You cannot be a member of our church unless you pay $9.95/month"* the same way Scientology does.

*Any of you who read that as literally meaning "Scientology costs $9.95/month" should be shot out of a cannon into the sun, not unlike many Scientologists.

Have any of you read his Dianetics books though? What crap.

I have read parts of it before. Even thought about picking it up once or twice (though the idea of contributing money towards it sits uneasy with me, much less $17.95 for a paperback  ]. It seems like a fairly typical self-help/metaphysical doctrine though, so I doubt I'd be terribly interested. My only concern is that people have this irrational fear of it, even though it's really quite a harmless society or business, as it would be. Do I buy into it? Certainly not. But something as internationally large as the church of scientology cannot possibly be referred to as a 'cult' of any sort.

Scientology is like the future ride at epcot center in dysney world, it's a 1950's view of what the future would be like in 1988:)
