If I were building something myself though, I would buy a Caterham 7 kit instead

Something like this one?

As a kit, this seems to be a good and popular choice. They look like they're very fun to drive as well! However, personally I really do not like the look of rear end of the car, it's a bit too golf cart-like for me.

Exactly. They're simple, clean, and very light and fun. The back end is classic, but certainly not to everyone's tastes I will admit.

If I could afford it, I'd drop the 35k gbp on a factory built Caterham R500 Superlight since it's just buckets of fun and supercar performance.

That looks like fun indeed! Did you spend a lot of time on it?

However, I'd rather have something I am allowed to drive on the streets as well :)

Not anywhere near the kind of time the senior engineering students put in. This car sucks up 1000's of man hours... Think about just designing, CAD'ing, jigging, welding and testing the frame (must be done from scratch each year)... and that's one of the easier subsystems. Trying to balance finals with tuning and programming engine mappings gets tricky...

Impressive. That's what you get when you want to design the whole thing from scratch I suppose..

Damn, just thinking about this makes me want to buy a kit right away.. Damn you lack of money, time and space.
