Sex, Death And The Meaning Of Life (pg. 6)

It wasn't a deflection at all, it really was just a joke. :)

I've said repeatedly on here that I dislike Richard Dawkins' "philosophy" but I absolutely respect him as a scientist.

I also don't understand why a Christian, Muslim or Jew should take so much abuse when they disagree with certain beliefs that are in the Torah, Quran, Old or New Testament.

I believe in God, but I don't specifically belong to any organized religion anymore. I am Catholic by definition but I disagree with their views on abortion/gay marriage and a few other bits of dogma and theology. And the only time I really go to church is if I'm dragged or if it's the Easter Vigil because I find the ceremony beautiful.

The Bill Maher video is sensationalism at times. I agree that religion is responsible for certain atrocities, but I don't think it's fair to blame the modern day lay people for past crimes like the inquisitions, wars and crusades.

I know a lot of atheists that don't believe in God, but put all their faith (base their entire world views) in certain authors like Dawkins, Hitchens (RIP), Dennett, Sean Carrol, Sam Harris etc. I'm not saying that's what the atheists around here do, but I see it every day.

Anyways, I like posting about this stuff, but as a result of this post I'm sure I'll have half a dozen new atheists busting my balls, so I'll end it here.

:D

The penalty for getting an abortion is introduced by Catholicism. Catholicism is interfering with civic affairs.

Oh, hi!

I see you heard something on the radio about the continent I live in, and you were already able to quickly diagnose the cause of the prohibition, despite the fact even Christians here know when to go against the Church and male chauvinism here is rampant (which makes matters even worse if you're a woman). That's also the reason why most women who opt for an abortion in Brazil are Christians, because screw religion.

Seriously now, the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (which I loathe), to give you an example, has repeatedly come forward against stem cell research and the like. However, and this may sound surprising to you, although we do let them have their say, their influence is very limited. Even evangelicals, which seem to have formed their own committee in the congress, have failed to repeal laws against "homophobic speech" (which would be fair, were they not protected by the law for the same reason).

We’re not talking “genocide. But throughout history certain social norms have become “extinct just via “free choice; inherited ideologies simply die out under when future generations inherit less and less. Nothing wrong with helping that process along.

I'm afraid this is not exactly how it happens (I can't think of an idea that died out because those who held it change their minds, can you?). I mean, I'd love it if society actually changed like that, but the reason I'm so concerned about the way atheist ideas are presented is because it also matters.

I know you dislike John Gray, but he has a point when he says (de)conversion in religion is not about what we believe, but how we live, and being an intolerant prick (intolerant against the idea of God, for example) is hardly a way to win the hearts of a generation who grows up thinking the religious are nice and atheists are all bitter sinners. Ideas change according to the beliefs of the following generations, mainly.

I have no issues with churches acting as charitable organisations. Of course, I see a complete divorce between religion and the charitable acts performed. NGOs for instance provide lots of charity, but they are not religious. I see churches as being the same, they provide charity to those less fortunate, and they just happen to be a religious organisation.

That's true. But why is it that the actions of Christians count when they're harming others, but they don't when they're helping those in need?

Does it make a difference?

I know it may sound bizarre, but it does. If your head hurts because of a tumor, taking an aspirin won't cure the tumor even if the headache goes away. Likewise, if you remove their "excuse" for their prejudice, but never really tackle the cause of their bigotry, they'll just move on and find another excuse (e.g. "homosexuality is unnatural", and so on).

It’s their free choice to discard silly ideas (or not). just as it’s mine to help them to make that decision, or mock them for it.

Well, mocking the ideas is all right. As for the help, now that's uncalled for unless they ask for it, don't you think?

Yeah but you’re ignoring the demonstrable examples of theism doing exactly that, now, today. The separation of church and state in the US is probably the cruellest joke ever. And that’s not even touching on the theocracies around the world.

I'm not ignoring them. I think theocracies are disastrous, and the current situation in the US troubles me. However, not all believers are like that, so we must ask yourselves if it really is religion (and not an underlying factor) that is causing it.

Each case should be dealt with separately, and then we should see what they have in common with one another, and what they don't have in common with the places where religion people are so unhinged. Then it would be fair to say you know how to tackle the problem.

The problem with atheism is that it bashes other religions but won't stop preaching harder and louder then any other religion out there. Atheists seem to care more about what You believe in and won't stop bombarding you with videos and flyers like they're the Jehovah Witness' of Science.

I don't understand what you mean? Where are you being bombarded with videos and flyers? I have never ever encountered atheist missionaries.

You would think if atheists believed in one life to live they would be a little more serious about what they want to accomplish and less compelled to give a what you think happens after death.

Again, it's not something I have ever encountered. I wonder where you meet atheists who preach about the lack of life after death?

Then you're, by definition, not a catholic. A catholic is a follower of the roman catholic church.

The fact that you;
1. Don't attend church, which the Bible says is pretty much mandatory, no matter what edition you're reading
2. Oppose core beliefs/values/views of the Roman Catholic church, I think they frown upon that as well

makes you an Apostate. By definition.

Actually by their laws, if you were born and baptized to be Catholic, you are a Catholic until you die, even if you renounce the church. Do you ever make arguments based on actual facts, or is it always just stuff that you make up and hope nobody calls you out on?

mannnn i feel a load of hostility coming from these atheists in here. Almost like they want to strap on a bomb and kill us to prove their point that nothing exists.

I don't know if you should call it preaching... Atheists usually seek out others like them to take part in constructive conversations. It seems natural for an Atheist to do that because they enjoy questioning things and don't ever close their minds off. It's not preaching if all you're doing is looking for others like you to help make sense of everything. If a religious person wanders by and reads something they don't like, it's not the Aethiests fault that the other person does not want to partake in reality.
