Sex, Death And The Meaning Of Life (pg. 8)

When did this conversation become about death?

You say that there is no scientific evidence to explain what happens after death? I don't want to burst your bubble, but there is plenty of evidence.

We now know that what we consider the ego, or consciousness, originates from the brain. This was pretty obvious all along, unfortunately Religion tried to convince us that consciousness, what they call "spirit", is seperate from the brain. Now I'm not going to explain the science behind consciousness and the mind because I will do a poor job and there are plenty of books that do a great job. You just need to understand the fact that if you damage certain parts of the brain, you can change a person's behaviour. This is proof that what people call consciousness, is just another physiological process.

If the brain dies, then everything that is "you", dies; There is nothing left.

that is great!!! the more you leaaaarnnnnnnn.

thanks for throwing more towards me that I didn't already know! but tell me about the guy who clinically died and came back to life to tell you about his slumber...ohhh ...there isnt one!

once again im not fighting you saying there is a spirit that leaves us. I'm saying nobody in knows what happens lol. Just like Scientists still don't fully understand birth or how life even began. Science does explain a lot but we still don;t know a 10000000x more then what we know. In the gap of emptiness where we have limited to no knowledge, some people like to place a god there to explain it which makes them feel all warm and cuddly and some people like to put a nothing over there because they don't like to believe some they just won't ever know and some of us like me just aren't willing to make judgement on it until all the facts are present.

Science does explain a lot but we still don;t know a whole lot. But why does something else have to happen! The brain dies, and consciousness originates from the brain, so it's over. Why must we assume there is more to come?

Humans think they are so important! They are the only living organism in the entire history of the planet earth to think that they deserve some infinite life.

but im not assuming that. and I am not assuming that everything I am turns to nothing.

all I assume is that we dont know lol

I'm not assuming that everything I am turns to nothing. I KNOW that everything I am turns to nothing. What more do you need?

actually thats a lie. deep down i hope something happens. Not because of my self importance or because I look forward to playing Jesus in a game of NFL Blitz '01 its because I don't like the thought of losing my loved ones forever. And thats probably everyones excuse as to why they believe in something.

But at the end of the day...as much as I hope my faith is right and yours is wrong, we won't know until that day. That's why I hate discussing it. No matter how close we think we are to understanding it we're still lifetimes away from fully truly understanding everything and to jump to conclusions without the facts present to me is retarded for both sides.

You're completely misunderstanding the philosophy of a non-believer. They don't put a 'nothing' over there, they put a 'allright lets ing figure this out" there.
And that's why reason will prevail. The more science will explain, the more apparent it will be to believers that what's written in their holy book is complete nonsense.
The alternative of publicly denying the advances of science is generally not a fruitful solution on a long term basis, as you can't trick newer generations into believing with old and outdated 'magic'.

"Oh Jesus turned water into wine and fed a lot of people with two fish and a bread or something? Oh just hold on while I rock out my iphad 60 which has a builtin touchscreen rehydrator like in back to the future, and also lasers and a whisky 'still and seamless twitter integration."
I would never have believed in Jesus as a child if I wasn't scared he would resurrect dead people to get me.
