Vinyls vs. CDs (pg. 4)

Something to keep in mind: Not all custom-made CDs of unoriginal work come from mp3s.
I own nearly 300 vinyl, all of which I have recorded into wave as I buy them, stored and cataloged in my computer, and burned onto CD for gigs.
Why do I do this?
1. Unless I spin at a dust free environment, my records will gather impurities that will affect it's performance.
2. One scratch and my $10 vinyl is gone. At least I have a copy.
3. I often edit the tracks I play, (similar to what PvD does), and re-edit and re-work the tracks. I can cut the intro up to the cue point for faster mixing. (One of the advances of vinyl over CDs is being able to see when the sonic structure of the track.)
4. When I'm spinning from 9-4, that's a lot of vinyl that gets used. Vinyl is too heavy (and I have only one vinyl box that holds 60).
Vinyl DJs do look "cooler" spinning from vinyl. I get more nods of approval from people when I spin from vinyl but I feel that's a entirely subjective outdated view. There are just too many annoying limitations for me to give my allegiance to vinyl. A mjor reason why new dance music comes out in vinyl is because CD factories usually just duplicate for "name branded" artists. That makes ZERO room for independent record labels and their artists. That is why they are forced to keep making vinyls. Don't think the record labels may have a choice in choosing whether their material is copied on vinyl or CD. A lot of them, if they had a choice, would pick CDs because they are cheaper to make.
Note: The sounds coming from vinyl may generated a deeper bass in the club than CDs. I don't find it to be my case because my CDs are recorded from vinyl but mp3s do generate a brighter sound than their vinyl counterpart. Something to keep in mind.
And I have not known a club to ask me whether my cds are illegal.
I spin probably 50%/50% cd/vinyl in 3-4 hour sets. More cds if I go for 6 hours. If it's 1-2 hours, I spin all from vinyl. |

I sincerely hope you do not own 1 single illegal mp3 in your computer else your ENTIRE "respect for producer argument" has just gone out the window. |

oh hell yea i own mp3s... i download them, listen to the tracks, if i like the track, i order it, ON VINYL... if not i delete the mp3...
i still believe in sharing the music, i just don't like when the artist is not being rewarded for their work when i see people download stuff from the net, burn the mp3s on the cd and play those...

The way I see it. If a DJ is making money off a producer's work. Then the DJ must pay the producer (buying the track).
But the discussion at hand is which media is best (if used in an ideal world.) |

Hi, Well.. I like the way you do it, sometimes i Do so.
But Sometimes I cant find a Vinyl, since is rare or i have to pay 100 USD for it... so I go and burn the mp3.. I dont think that if u really really like a tune and u cant find it on Vinyl u wont Burn the mp3.. or im wrong? |

Yes! I definately agree with your first statement!
And about the second one... You and I discussed this issue before, remember? I proved to you over and over again that Vinyl was a way better medium than CDs, yet you insisted CDs were better...

well personally the most i've paid for a rare record thus far has been 80 USD for Ayu - M EP... I've also bought other records that were rare and that I've loved for like anywhere from 30-60 USD... The point is, if I love a track a lot, I will pay anything to get it.

I agree with you Scottaculous. Trancegeek, not ONCE in this entire thread did you have a single factual based sentence in any of your posts. I went back and red them all. The title of the thread is "vinyl records vs cds". And not once did you even state an advantage of vinyl over cds. You posted some contradictory statements about respect, in the begining, and that was about it. Please read what the hell you are actually typing and think about if it makes sense with the topic of the thread before you post garbage. Garbage that propagates the thread with useless information. |
