Keyed tunes for Harmonic mixers (pg. 2)

I dont think those are correct but i could be wrong. I have gone through all my records with a guitar and keyed then up and this is what i got.
Your 5A should be 10A (B minor)
Your 2A should be 7A (D minor)
Your 12A should be 5A (im basing this on Tomcraft- Loneliness which is a 5A at normal speed but when pitched up passed 6+ it becomes a 12)
Your 4A should be 9A (E minor)
Your 11A should be 4A (F minor)
Your 1A should be 6A (G minor)
Your 8A should be 1A (A flat minor)
Your 3A should be 8A (A minor)
Your 10A should be 3A (B flat minor)
Thats the difference i have found but even though to me yours seems to be wrong, if you were to mix say a 5 to a 10 or a 2 to a 7, it is in key and would sound really good.
Try out the changes and let me know how it goes. |

Interesting, but I would have to disagree on a couple of points.
I had to get out hte electric tuner just to make sure.
I just tested Saltwater - The Legacy on both turntables and it is a Cm (5A) as I put previously.
Tomcraft - Loneliness is a C#m (12A) also. But I do agree that you get a key change at +6% although in my book that is a Dm (7A).
I also dug up an album that I had on both CD and Vinyl (Prodigy - Music for the jilted generation) and played Voodoo people both at the same time through my mixer, and although there was a phasing effect there was not enough speed difference to justify a drop in key.
In addition I got out an Iron Maiden CD where I know the intro goes in Em and played along with that (Wasted Years of Somewhere in Time).
What is interesting is that all of the differences seem to point at the fact that one of us has a dodgy turntable or an out of tune guitar.
I use 1210s and before I bought them I had some 1200s and the keys are the same on all of them, now either I must be the unluckiest DJ alive (Wouldn't surprise me if it was so) to get 4 Technics with the speed that's screwed up, CD turntables and MP3 player too for that matter or perhaps yours has a lower zero setting. You can actually get a difference in +-0 on deck brands. Another thing you may want to do is check the strobe light on the side of the Deck plate.
What is good news however and a good indication to your ability is that you are picking the keys out correctly based on the equipment that you are using.

This statement however is incorrect. On the contrary if you were to do those mixes and try to blend them it would sound quite rough. If you do that mix all you are doing is going down one note in the chromatic scale which has nothing to do with harmonic mixing as such. You could however do this as a key change but you would find that you would kill the energy on the dance floor with this as it gives a kind of deflated feel when done.
By all means do the reverse like Bm (10A) into Cm (5A) as you would get an uplifting key change that would give a sense of renewed energy, but never blend them.
On a general note for anyone who cares to read:
For a harmonic mix you should be thinking along the lines of this.
This is not true 100% but I would say 99.9% ;) , you do sometimes get some real weird tunes out there:
A mix between two tunes in the same key will sound perfect. This is also known as a 'tonic' mix. (Cm into Cm = 5A into 5A).
A tune will mix well with another that's 5 steps (Semitones) up on the chromatic scale. This would be a 'Sub-Dominant' Mix (Sounds kind kinky:tongue3 ). (Cm into Fm = 5A into 4A)
You can also mix one that is 7 steps up on the chromatic scale and this would be refered to as it's 'Dominant'. (Cm into Gm = 5A into 6A).
The Camelot method makes this easy as all you have to do is add one or minus one and you have one of these mixes.
In addition you can mix into relevant 'Major' or 'Minor' but as most dance music is written in minor keys I didn't see the need to do into detail.

Wow thanks Nemesis...your little explanation in your last post was JUST what I was looking for.
For those of you who do know how to harmonically mix, I was wondering if you can give some examples on how to change the feel of the mix(i.e whether you want to settle down, kick it up, or explode into the next tune)
The reason why I'm asking this is because I want to hear what it sounds like based on technical info, not just random records and I happen to match on luck. This way I have some kind of reference on what a harmonic mix really sounds like.

i'm no expert. but i think when you want to step up the emotion and energy of a mix, you would mix in your next song which is in a compatible key with the song being played and which is higher. the opposite is true for stepping down the energy |

Sure thing...
A key in music is a bunch of musical notes that go well together. A note is like C Major or C Minor, you must of heard of them in grade one right? :D
When mixing a new song into an already running song, notes from the same key usually (not always) go well together and sound good as they blend aka harmonic mix.
You know that two songs don't together when an newbie DJ (or a pro sometimes) tries to blend two songs together and it doesn't sound right even if its beatmatched and EQed or filtered right.
You gotta be carefull however, increasing the speed (pitch) of the song by more then +/-3% will make a difference and I think +/-6% will be the next key up or down.
There is more info, like Camelot's Easymix System and mixing so the enegry always seems to be increasing by going one note up on your next mix but you can find more info on that as you learn. For eg going from Cm to C#m or from Em to Fm will seem like your building up the set/tempo when infact you just increased the enegry by going one key up.
